Drip..Drip..Drip. Rain falls faster than a hunter with its prey. It's dark.. And cold- too cold for a small kit to be out alone. In a swamp, by a river a silhouette of a cat is pacing around, muttering to himself every so once in a while. After a while, in the distance, another cat is running towards the pacing silhouette. Dangling from his jaws is a small bundle. Out of breath, the tom places the small kit down on the wet ground. He sighs" Poor kit" he meows. Just looking at the pitiful thing and its shallow breaths. It made him feel a deep connection and sadness to the little kit. " I don't think the mother even got the chance to name her." The taller tom's tail shifted back and forth. He shakes his head, as he walks closer into the moonlight, showing a big scar on his right eye. He speaks," Don't get too attached Jagged Moss, you know why we must do this. For once a season on the blue moon's call we must-'' Jaggedmosh cuts him off." I know Peatfur I know-we must make a sacrifice to The Decayer or in moons to come, all will fall.."

Jagged Moss wasn't done proving his point. " The father is unknown but rumors all say he willingly gave up his newborn kit.. just because we have had no dying elders or left to sacrifice... Some great hero he must feel like." he huffed " I'm not dropping a kit who hasn't even opened their eyes into a river!"

"Only Starclan would know what would happen if we didn't follow up procedure.. a war? a leaf-bare without prey? A visit from The Decayer himself??" Pearfur stomped his paw to the mushy ground, agitated- it was pouring and cold, the old warrior groaned. " If you can't do it- then I will" He slowly picked up the kit off the ground, and padded over to the rushing river. Jaggedmoss huffed and followed. They both look at their glistening reflections in the water. After some silence,

Jaggedmoss finally spoke, " This kit must have been cursed to receive such a quick life like this, huh?" he stared at the kit, who was now mewing. Peatfur only grunted in response. " May StarClan light your new life, and may your hunting be swift, dear kit." And with those last words, he dropped the kit in the rushing river...

Together they run off and disappear into the trees. Up in Starclan, some of the starry queens had been watching the whole scene. Some muttered to each other, some just shook their heads. It was unanimous among the stellar she-cats that this was too cruel of a punishment for this kit. Finally, one queen of the name of Songfall decided to take action.

She then descended to find the kit moving in the blue rapids. Seeing the small kit down the river, she gracefully dove in and scooped the tiny she-kit up with her mouth. She skipped through the rain and found a safe cave to shelter. She then nursed the kit (whose soul was about to be taken by the Decayer as soon as it died) back to good health and warmed it. The little kit had a broken shoulder from hitting a rock downstream. With a touch of Songfall's paw, her bones were mended. Sensing another cat, (supposedly a rogue) mother nearby, the queen placed the kit under a little birch tree.

" Dear kit, I hope you can now live a better life, anything is better than unreasonable death. I must tell you something now. I am not an earthly queen. I may have died a queen though- but my milk isn't the same-I have blessed it with two abilities.." She paused to listen to the rain, the rogue was getting closer to her. Songfall continued " The first was the ability to come back to life once. For no earthly herbs could help you with that... And the second ability of mending.. almost like how I mended you. Use it very wisely dear kit, consequences could erupt..¨. Songful glided towards the kit, who was now warm and shaded. Her breaths were still shallow, but they were better now. ¨, for saving and restoring your life I don't ask for much in return. I died giving birth to twins and never had the chance to name them so I'll want to return to name you... I'll name you Phoenix. ¨

She started skipping towards the clouds, her time was up. ¨ I give you the name Phoenix because you were given something few cats can have the opportunity to have. a second chance...¨
