Desiree Lai turns off the television after hearing the same news for the hundredth time.
For 20 years the world has noticed the population's fertility problems, and since then every woman, or man doesn’t matter, doesn't seem to have any other topics to discuss.
The woman sighs, there are 4 years and a few months to her limit time to take the UB serum. She shivers only thought about that.
Why? Why did she have to give a stupid injection to find a man? A man she would be forced to spend the rest of her life with?
"Pff .." she snorts from her nose with a lour on his face.
In the past, before the advent of technology (or just a better transportation than a horse or a mule), people weren't forced to find their own legacy.
Or soul mate. A term not approved by the scientific community, but commonly used by every human being on the planet.
"How romantic." She thinks, rolling her eyes behind her head.
In that beautiful past, life was better, in Desiree's opinion. You could live without any social pressure of having to find, and procreate, with your bond.
"Not even we were farm animals!" the woman says angrily.
The problem with these stupid laws, was that they just saw the scientific and cynical side of what a bond was.
A bond does not necessarily turn into a relationship of love (or sex), it is simply the universe (or whatever the current theory of all these men in white coats says) pointing to the person with whom genetically, and "spiritually", you are more compatible.
"Bullshit!" Desiree snaps, while watching at the black screen television: "Tell those people who find themselves bonded to crazy murderers or rapists. Or those who hate Nutella!"
She got up from the sofa to go and prepare herself something to eat. The digital clock in the kitchen: 3.37 AM.
"Oh well… Fuck." she whispers in front of the empty refrigerator.
She looks at her wrinkled, discolored suit on the light of the fridge. She does not want to dress something better to go and buy one of those ready food at the supermarket 24/24.
She shrugs with indifference and goes to the entry door. She leaves the house after dressing her precious gloves.
"Fuckin 'world!" she says angrily when she walks out of the apartment complex.
The first thing she notices outside the door, in a far too big advertisement:
