Invidia

" Do you have the girl, Vadiem?" I snarl at the face gazing back at me from the crystal pool. His eyebrows raise.

" Of course I do, my queen. There is no need to fret Invidia. She is safe with me."

I nod my head, starting to pace back and forth in front of the clear water. Everything is done. But still, I feel no peace.

" What is troubling you?" Vadiem asks with concern in his voice. But of course, he doesn't care about me. He only agreed to this deal because there was so much power to gain from it. I shake my head at him. His face and body ripples as a gust of cold airflow across the surface of the water. And at the moment I think he cannot see me, I grimace. But he sees it anyway.

" May I be so bold as to ask you, what is the purpose of me holding Sanem captive? She is no threat to our plans."

In an outbreak of rage and fear, I turn on him with a growl.

" I have seen it all."

Vadiem doesn't seem to be taken aback by my outburst. He simply smirks at me. I bare my teeth at him in disgust. I hate all the questions lesser beings have to ask.

" Fine. I will explain," I see Vadiem's pointy, slender ears perk up, " My father Regis, forbids us from seeing into the future, even though our powers allow us to. He thinks it is cruel and wicked. But that has never stopped me before," I smile to myself, " I have been looking into the future ever since my sister Amare told me how to. I have always been looking, just to make sure nothing will ever come in between me and my plans. But one day when I was gazing into the future, I saw a girl called Sanem. And do you know what this girl was doing?" I don't give Vadiem time to answer, " She was using the crystal pool. She was changing fate. She was ruining my plans. She was destroying EVERYTHING!" I take a deep breath to quickly calm myself, " But for centuries I assured myself she did not have the powers of the gods. I told myself there is no way a human can harness the crystal pool. But it was no use, she invaded my dreams. Controlled my nightmares. Clouded my judgement. So that is why I changed her fate. Made her walk right towards your camp. I am positive you won't let her go. And she can NEVER know of our plans."

When I am finished Vadiem nods slowly, looking a little bewildered.

" I will keep her from getting away," He assures me, " My son Damien will be assigned to her side at all times. He will not let her out of his sight. I promise."

I nod flattening down my night black dress.

" I know you will."

There is a moment of silence between us. My mind is whirling. Finally, Vadiem speaks up.

" I must go, Invidia."

" Yes of course." I take a step forward, reaching out my slender hand towards the water, " I will call for you if I need to."

He bows once, before I dip my index finger into the icy liquid, right above his shimmering face. Ripples spread out rapidly, concealing all his features.

When the water has gone still once more, his reflection is no longer there. In its place is just an empty pool, filled with immense power.

Sanem

" So, Elysium aye?" I casually say to Nasir as we walk through the camp Thunderstone, " You didn't tell me about that."

I sense him grimace internally. We are walking side by side down the dirt path, huts lining each side and scattered everywhere. I stride with my hands behind my back and my head held high. But Nasir slouches along beside me. He has been different ever since we came to Thunderstone.
