Chapter 6: Heart On Ice

Three months later

A quarter of a year has passed since Tatsumi had escaped the Empire. Immediately afterward a search party was rallied by the Jaegers and Esdeath yet no success was found. The whole countryside of the Empire had been scoured and after weeks of hunting, they were still no closer to finding Tatsumi. Everyone involved in the hunt for him was beginning to grow impatient, restless, and frustrated. This was especially true with the man orchestrating the hunt, (Y/N).

If he really wanted to, he would've called off the search a few weeks ago. But because Esdeath was so insistent and relentless in attempting to find Tatsumi, he continued the search despite his personal feelings. Currently, he and Wave were at the last location Tatsumi was spotted, Fake Mount. Danger Beasts and any other living thing(besides Wave of course) were slain without mercy.

Hours of killing, walking and searching once again resulted in nothing for the duo. Sheathing his sword, (Y/N) turned around to face Wave, who was looking rather fatigued.

(Y/N): "We should take a break. I can tell you're tired. I am too honestly."

Wave sighed inwardly knowing that at least for now, he would be able to take a break. Both men sat on the ground and took out canteens of water.

Wave: "(Y/N)?"

(Y/N): "Hm?"

Wave: "Don't you think this is getting a little old?"

(Y/N): "Searching for Tatsumi? Yes."

Wave: "As much as I hate to say it, I think he's a lost cause now. It's been three months since he's disappeared."

(Y/N): "I agree with you one hundred percent, Wave. If he wanted to come back, he would've by now."

Wave: "Then why are we still looking?"

(Y/N): "... I don't know really. But I do know that Esdeath is an extremely persistent woman. She's relentless when it comes to getting what she wants."

Wave: *Sigh* "I'm just... Really tired."

(Y/N): ... Me too Wave... Me too."

Wave: "We should be prioritizing finding Night Raid and taking them down! Not on-"

(Y/N): "Enough. I share your same frustration. Trust me, I get it. I feel the same way."

Wave: "Then why are we still looking?"

(Y/N): "I..."

Wave: "We can't do this forever. We have to stop looking for him and start looking for Night Raid so we can eliminate them!"

(Y/N): ...

(Y/N) closed his eyes and sat quietly as he continued to drink from his canteen.

Wave: "Are you just going to sit there or do something?!"

(Y/N) abruptly stopped drinking and opened his eyes to see the enraged expression Wave had. He quietly put away his canteen, a small smirk on his face and...

SMACK!

(Y/N) backhanded Wave.

(Y/N): "If you ever speak to me like that again I'll feed you to the shadows. Do I make myself clear?"

Wave: "Y-Yes-"

(Y/N): "Yes what?"

Wave: "... Yes sir..."

(Y/N): "Good..."

With an audible grunt, (Y/N) sat up and dusted his pants off. He then extended an arm to Wave, who was still on the ground holding a hand over the cheek (Y/N) had slapped.
