I opened my eyes. They hurt as soon as I opened them. Bright sunlight hit me. I squinted and sat upright. I looked around me and didn't recognize where I was. There were trees everywhere, but I didn't remember being in the forest. I looked down to see that my clothes were dirty and torn. I had cuts and scars on hands and arms. Blood had dried on my forehead. My head hurt like someone smashed a brick on it. Footsteps echoed behind me and a hand touched my shoulder. "Are you okay?" an unfamiliar voice asked.
I didn't know who she was. I was scared so I stood up to run. Pain shot through my head and I stumbled to the ground. I backed away and pushed myself up against a tree. "Who are you? And where am I?!" I demanded. The girl stared at me with a worried look. "Do you remember anything?" She asked. She scared me. Suddenly a fox came running toward me. It had dried blood on its fur. It ran toward me and started nibbling on my hand. I pushed it away on instinct. The little animal fell to the floor and made little squeaking noises. I had felt bad but it attacked me. The girl then fell to the foxs side. "Why would you do that?! It didn't attack you. It thinks your its friend!" She yelled as she picked up the fox. I sat against the tree and crossed my arms. "Are you okay, copper? She said like she was talking to a baby. I noticed how caring she was. I felt like I could trust her. The way she held copper made her seem friendly. "Can you tell me whats going on?" I asked a little calmer.
The girl sat down next to me and gave me some water. She seemed nice so I decided to trust her. Then she began explaining. "Its a really long story. Your parents died in a car accident when you were twelve. You were adopted by this crazy lady named Kate who wanted to use your skin to make dolls. We ran away from her house but she found us. We killed her and now bad guys are after us. Lucy, Kates daughter, came along with us. You have a little brother named joshua. The bad guys kidnapped them last night. You cried and ran. I guess you ran into a tree branch at full speed and went unconscious . you've been asleep for a day and a half. That's all I know." She said. As soon as she said the name Joshua I remembered everything. I sat upright and my eyes widened. "Oh my gosh!! I remember!!" I told her. "You do?!" She said happily. "Yes..." I gleamed. My happiness faded when I remembered how they took Joshua. I crawled back into a ball with my head between my knees. I rembered everything, even though I didn't want to.
Anastacia realised how sad I was and her smile also faded. I cried again. I was so scared. "What are we going to do?" Anastacia asked. I feel we are always asking that question. "What can we do. Its not like we can try to get Joshua back. There's nothing we can do but go for the city again..." I said with no emotion. Anastacia frowned and we sat there in silence. I was angry, scared, and depressed all at the same time. My emotions just overwhelmed me and I didn't know what to do so we sat there just thinking for half an hour. I thought about what Joshua and lucy were doing right now. They were probably scared, just like me. I didn't know what anastacia was thinking about, but she started to cry. I've never seen her cry like this before, she was always the strong one. I got up sat next to her. Just seeing her cry made me want to cry. I teared up but held them in. She cried and rocked back and forth. We were finally loosing our minds. We couldn't take it anymore. I couldn't just sit here and wait to die. I couldn't let anastacia be sad so I stood up. She looked at me and I extended my hand out. She took it and pulled herself to her feet. she wiped her tears and nose. "What are we doing?" She asked in between sobs. "We can't just sit here. We have to do something" i said blankly. I suddenly had a burst of inspiration to do something.
Anastacia and i hopped on the fourwheeler and we just started driving. we didn't know where we were going but we didn't stop. I had ran a long way that night. There was no telling where we were. We would have to take our chances and just head straight until we found a climbable tree. The tree smaller as we headed for the city. They were so tall and now they were turning to shrubs. We kept on going for half an hour. We had stopped to get water on the way. It looked clear so we didn't boil it. Our stomaches growled so loud. we could hear the grumbling over the sound of the twigs breaking under the wheels of the four-wheeler. "What did you do while I was asleep?" I asked out of the blue. "I mostly waited for you to get up. I ate the last of the food. Sorry, but I was really hungry. I also cried a lot." She said. "Its ok you ate the food. We are almost to the city anyway. I think we need about 4 miles left." I said. She nodded her head. "I don't know how you got up and kept on going. You are one of the strongest people I know." Anastacia said. I smiled at the compliment. "You are, too. We both went through some crazy stuff. And its only been a few months since Kate adopted me. I'm not going to lie, meeting you was one of the best things that happened out of all of this." I said to anastacia. "Thanks, I think we make a good team." She said. I nodded and continued driving.
We came across a patch of tall trees. I couldn't tell what kind they were. Something foreign. "Are those climbable?" Anastacia asked. "I think so." I replied. I jumped off the fourwheeler and walked toward the tree. I lifted my right leg onto a short limb and hoisted myself up. "I'm not sure I can climb all the way to the top." I said shakily. Anastacia walked toward the tree also. "Well we are just going to have to try." She said while shrugging her shoulders. I stop up on the second limb and hugged the tree. I waited for anastacia to find a limb and hoist herself up it. She already had her leg up by the time I turned around. "This should be easy." I mumbled sarcastically. By the time I was on the third limb, anastacia was on her eight. "Maybe you should just go to the top without me. I'll wait here." I screamed to her. She nodded her head and said "okay. It might take a while though, the limbs are getting smaller and farther apart." I told her to just keep on trying. While she climbed, i sat there feeling miserable. I could'nt help but be angry. Life isnt fair to me at all. They took away evetything i love. They stripped me of happiness. I was about to break doen and cry but anastavia called something from the top limb. "It looks like we have to walk another two miles. But we're going the right way!" She yelled. I wiped my tears and started making my way down the tree. Anastacia was actually down before me.
"So we have to keep on going straight?" I asked her when I made it to the ground. "Yup. I'm glad we weren't going the wrong way." She said. I nodded my head and started walking to the four-wheeler. "Can you drive?" I asked anastacia. She agreed and we both hopped onto the four-wheeler.
The road was getting shaky and big boulders blocked our path. Anastacia pulled over and examined the road ahead. There were small paths in between he rocks. "Can the four-wheeler fit through there?" Anastacia asked. "It should. The spacing looks big enough." I gave anastacia the "should we go for it?" Look and she nodded her head. Anastacia faced ahead and started going through the rocks. We drove slowly in between them and got snagged twice. By the time we escaped from the rocks, the four-wheeler had scratches and dents in it.
We passed the rocks and now we were in an open field. There was a cliff ahead. We had to go down that cliff to make it to the city. We still needed half a mile to go. "We're almost there." Anastacia told to me "That's good." I said in response. What are we going to do when we get there?" She asked. "Probably just find out where we are then find a police station." I shrugged. "Oh." Was all anastacia could say. We kept on driving. "I think I can drive now." I told anastcia. "Are you sure?" She asked. "I'm positive." I reassured her. She got out of the front seat and I got into it. I was determined to find my brother back, and to do that, i had to stay strong. I faced ahead and starting driving.
The road started getting rocky again. The four wheeler started to slow down. It started slowing half a mile ago. I decided not to tell anastacia, I didn't want for her to worry. I was worried myself. If our only source of transportation stopped, i dont know what we would do. Suddenly the four-wheeler starting making a noise. It was like a grumbling stomach. It slowed then came to a stop. Smoke filled the air around us. "What's going on?" Anastacia asked while choking on stale air. The air started smelling like gas and fumes. My throat felt dry. We needed needed to get away from the four-wheeler. Smoke came from the hood of it. "I think its broken." I said. Anastacia sighed and sat on the ground. I suddenly burst out in laughter. I stomach hurt from all the laughing after a while. Anastacia looked at me like I was crazy. "Are you okay?" She asked. I calmed down and sat next to her. "I find it so amusing that everything goes wrong for us. So far, nothing good has happened." I said while staring toward the cliff. "Oh. Well, how are we going to get to the city now?" Anastacia asked. "I guess we walk from here." I said. We both got to our feet. Anastacia picked up copper. We began walking toward the city again.
We walked the rest of the way to the cliff. Now, all we had to do was climb down and walk a couple more hours to the city. I suddenly realised something. "Why haven't we heard anything city-like. I haven't heard any cars or planes. Its been quiet." I asked suspiciously. "That's true...I wonder why." Anastacia said. I thought about that for a while. I guess the only way we will know is if we keep on walking.
