Tom awoke in an empty room in the Gympie Police Station. He was naked of course and had no idea of what year it was.  Now he had to work out what to do when somebody found him.

He sat there for about two hours shivering when the door suddenly swung open and a fresh-faced constable walked in with a milkshake and a donut. When he saw Tom sitting there naked he dropped the milkshake. It exploded on impact sending milk all over the constable's uniform. “Where did you come from?" he managed to stammer out.

“I am not sure. What is the date?"

“24th.”

“What year?”

“59. Surely you know the year?”

“I do now. Do you think you could get me some clothes I am cold?"

The constable backed out and locked the door behind him. He went to the desk Sergeant. “Sarge, what is the kid doing in Room two? And why is he naked.”

The desk Sergeant looked puzzled.  “There is nobody in there.”

“Yes, there is, and he is naked.”

The sergeant took the key and went to investigate. When he saw Tom sitting there he asked all the same questions and Tom gave the same answer. “I don’t know.”

After some scrambling around they found a pair of overalls for Tom and got him something to eat. The sergeant said. “Constable Flinders, you found him, you look after him till we can work out who he is and where he comes from."

When everybody had left and it was only Constable Flinders and Tom in the room. Tom said.  “I am a time traveller. I have come to tell you about a kidnapper down near Cooroy.”

“Come on lad just tell us who you are so we can get you home.”

“Honestly my name is Thomas H. Adams and I was born in 1957. I was last in 1972. But if you want to catch a kidnapper I know where there is one in Cooroy. He kidnapped me in 1968. But I escaped in May 1959 and the girl I saved shot him. If you go down there now you could rescue her and catch the kidnapper.”

“That makes no sense at all.” Said Constable Flinders.

“Well, tonight when I go to sleep I will disappear and if I do, will you go and have a look if I tell you how to get there.”

“If we haven’t found out where your from by then I promise to watch you go to sleep and if you disappear I will go and arrest your kidnapper. Deal?”

“Deal.” Said Tom.

Despite the police’s best efforts they were unable to find out anything about Tom. They did establish that there was a Thomas H. Adams born in Gympie Hospital in November 1957. They contacted the parents but they had no idea who Tom was. They even came in and had a look at him but they didn’t recognize him.

That night despite finishing his shift at 6 PM Constable Flinders stayed with Tom in the locked room until he went to sleep. At that point he screamed.

Constable Flinders reported to the desk Sergeant that he was going home.  But he didn’t go home he drove all the way to Cooroy then followed the directions given by Tom. Tom had said to go five kilometres along the Noosa Road from the Phillips 66 service station. This was a problem because the odometer was in miles. He stopped at the Cooroy Police Station mainly to find out how far five kilometres was but also as a courtesy to explain why he was in their territory.

When he said he had a tip about a man known as Mathew Connolly he was advised that Connolly was known to police and he should be careful. In fact the fat sergeant said he would go with him to check out the story.  He knew where Connolly lived.

When they got there rather than go by the book as the tip was from a crazy person, they quietly walked up to the sheds and looked in. One shed was open and completely empty. The other had a padlock on it but it was unlocked though the door was shut. There was a light on inside and they could hear scuffles. Then a voice said. “Come on my pretty time to make daddy happy.” Then there was scream. Flinders kicked the door open in time to see Connolly with a cigarette burning a young girl’s face.

“Police.” He called, “Step away from the girl.” By this time the fat policeman from Cooroy had his gun out pointing it at Connolly. Quick as a flash Connolly grabbed the girl by the throat and stood behind her.

“Piss off or I will strangle her.”

The fat policeman said. “I doubt it,” and stepped up to Connolly and stuck the gun into his temple. “Now let the girl go and I won't shoot you.”

Connolly gave up.
