Back in 1972 there were no developments in the case. Tom spent the day helping his mother around the farm except for the run into town to report to the police. They had nothing to say on the case. Inspector Flinders was not available to talk to. He managed to take his horse for a ride in the afternoon. He always seemed too busy of late to spend any time with the horse. It was beginning to look like mum was right about having a horse. They were a lot of work and a teenager just doesn’t have time to do them justice.
That night he went to bed just after eight hoping to go to sleep at 8:15.
He awoke in his bedroom but there was a new wardrobe in the room. “Hey Ben” he called. No answer. He went outside and found Elvis. The dog was not so friendly as he had been yesterday and growled at Tom. Tom quickly ducked inside and shut the door. I guess that is what Ben meant about getting in past Elvis, Tom thought.
He went to the computer room and found Brendan’s phone number above the landline phone. He called.
“Hello, Ben. I thought you were at work this week?” Brendan said into the phone.
“Brendan, It is me, Tom.”
“Tom who?”
“Tom Adams, from 1972.”
“Bloody hell where have you been? We thought you must be dead or locked up. What has happened?”
“Nothing since yesterday.”
“Tom it is 2018. We haven’t seen you in three bloody years, and now you show up and act like nothing has happened.”
“Well, it hasn’t for me. It was only yesterday that I was here. Did you brother get the results of the DNA test?”
“Gee I had forgotten about that. No. They wouldn’t give him the sample from Evidence without some form of court order or something. I remember when he told me I hatched a plan to break into the Evidence Locker and steal the sample. But as you never came back I never bothered.”
“Do you reckon your plan will work? Maybe we can do it today?”
“Oh the plan will work all right. But I have to go to work.”
“What do you do?”
“I work in IT for Queensland Health.”
“What are you a doctor or a nurse or something?”
“No. IT. Computer management.”
“Oh. Who is looking after Elvis and the cattle?”
“My little brother, Eddie.”
“When is he coming over? Elvis won’t let me out of the house.”
