When Tom and his mother arrived at the police station to report for his bail. Inspector Flinders was available for them to see. Tom didn’t know if the inspector was his friend or if was just going to let Detective Wilberforce stitch him up on the murder. It seems now that Tom had been formerly charged they were not even looking for another suspect.
When they sat down in the inspector’s office Tom said. “I have had the semen sample tested against Connolly for DNA. It is a match or close enough to be a match unless Connolly has a twin brother.”
“Thomas, this DNA you are talking about it is all science fiction. I have heard about genes and DNA but there is nothing to suggest that we can match one sample with another. Not yet anyway. Even if what you say is true we can’t use it in court. I know you believe it. But unfortunately I can’t. From our perspective it just looks like you are making up stories to get away with the crime.”
“Can’t you at least put a watch on Connolly. We all know what he is, and I am sure I saw him at the surf club.”
“See that is another thing. You are the only one to have seen him. So again you may be lying to cover yourself.”
“Can’t you at least ask him where he was on the night of the murder?”
“No, we have no reason to suspect him except for what you say. If we haul him in straight after he gets out of jail he will accuse us of harassment.”
Tom lost his cool with that. He said a lot of things that he shouldn’t have. His mother yelled at him to shut up. The inspector said calmly, “Tom I know how you feel but my hands are tied. Lucky for you I do believe you and so I am going to ignore that outburst. But if you ever carry on like that again I will charge you. Do you understand?”
Tom grunted.
“Do you understand?” Flinders said again.
“Yes.” Tom said through his teeth.
“Come on, love. Let’s go home.” Joyce Adams said.
That afternoon as they were having a cup of tea before the milking, Tom’s dad came home from work early. Tom explained all about DNA and about the twin thing.
“So what do you want to do” his father asked him.
“I would like to be able to watch Connolly 24/7 and see what he is up to. But that is impossible. What I could do is go into the hospital on the night of the 11th and go to sleep at 29 past 7 and see if there is a twin born that may have been adopted out.”
“It does sound dangerous but I guess going to jail for something you didn’t do would be a whole lot more dangerous. Though I am not sure what it will prove, but I am happy to drive you there. I will sit in the car all night so that you have a place to come back to. What will you do for clothes? It is getting quite cool this time of year.”
