One by one, all the competitors passed forward to show off their talents to the judges. Zuma was the fifth out of ten competitors to go up. He waved to everybody and they cheered him on. He looked at Chase, who was smiling at him. You got this, Zuma, he mouthed out.
Zuma ran into the water and landed in the water. He swam his way to deeper waters. He stood on his board and found his balance. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. I'm doing this for fun, he told himself. Nobody is judging me. There is no competition. It's just me. Everything's cool. He opened his eyes and was shocked by what he saw. The only ones he could see on the beach were the other pups and Ryder. They were all cheering him on, telling him that he can do it.
The first wave came. Zuma rode it like it was nothing. He passed in the middle of the wave as it rolled over him. When he reached the end of the wave, he went up into the air and made a backflip with his surfboard before landing on the other side. He stayed on top of the wave as it carried him towards the beach. As he got closer to shore, he turned his surfboard so then he could slow down. Water splashed him in the face, so he closed his eyes to prevent saltwater from entering. When he opened them up again, he noticed that everyone was back. All the judges, bystanders, and competitors were staring at him, smiling. The surfboard pushed onto shore and Zuma walked off it. Everyone was cheering and applauding. He looked over at the judges, who were smiling and giving him thumbs up. He walked up to the other pups and leaned the surfboard against Chase's post.
"How did it go?" Chase asked.
"I did what you said," Zuma replied. "I closed my eyes and told myself that no one was judging me and that there was no competition. When I opened them back up, I only saw you guys. It was awesome. Thanks, dude."
Chase laughed. "I knew you could do it."
On the other side of the beach, Mayor Humdinger and his nephew Harold were watching the event. Or rather, the mayor was watching the event. Harold was typing things into his computer.
"My kitten could do so much better than what that pup can," Mayor Humdinger bragged to Harold. He was holding the kitten that was supposed to impersonate Zuma. He stroked the back of the kitten's head as the kitten purred. "I mean, he is just as capable as Zuma. Don't you think so, nephew?"
"Uh-huh, yeah," Harold said, uninterested in the conversation. He kept on typing on his laptop.
The mayor frowned at his nephew and muttered to himself, "At least my kittens pay attention to me, unlike someone I know." He skipped a rock over the water. The rock skipped three times before sinking. "What do you think, Copycat?"
The orange cat that was sitting on top of a boulder sighed. "Personally, I never was interested in water events. They're pointless in my mind. Do you know what isn't pointless? I can't wait to start my plan to take over the city."
"Our plan," Harold corrected, without taking his gaze off the screen.
Copycat waved his hand as if pushing away the statement. "Yeah, yeah, whatever. Anyway, we're stronger now and we can start the mission soon."
"What exactly are we going to do?" Mayor Humdinger asked.
"Well, simple. We are going to capture the Paw Patrol and get them out of the way."
"And this time, you better make sure you capture all of them."
"You better make sure you capture all of them," Copycat mocked. "I know, mayor. After that, Harold is going to build huge robots to surround the city. We are going to take the meteor to strengthen our forces. After that... That's all I got, but it's still a plan." He laughed but started coughing. "Fur Ball," he explained, acting like it was nothing.
