No matter how tired and worn out Shiro was, he couldn't forget you. Once he got captured by the Galra, he met you, another captive from earth/other, and you quickly became friends. You weren't cell mates, so he didn't know the time would come when the Galra would take you away. When he managed to escape, he looked all over for you, but he couldn't find you. He had to make a tough choice, escaping without you by his side.
