Losing someone was hard. You had left to patrol surrounding planets on a recon mission when you got ambushed by Lotor's fleet. It didn't take long for the others to show up, but when they did you were already in hot heat. The ship was malfunctioning, one of the jets had blown out, and you didn't have control over your steering. Pidge was freaking out, not able to reach you, and just barely fighting off the ships. Then everything changed. Lotor himself was in the air, and he had a course set to you. Pidge couldn't control her thoughts. After only barely getting Matt back, she was going to lose you. In a last effort to reach you she crashed through some of the Galra ships, but she was too late.
