"I love you, Andrea."
The woman freezes in place, her hand stuck, hovering over the handle of the car door. "I'm sorry," she turns to look back at her boyfriend, sitting on the driver's seat, "what?"
Luke swallows down a lump in his throat then repeats, "I love you."
"Y-You're joking," Andrea breathes out, her eyes widening in surprise.
"No." Her boyfriend shakes his head. "I'm serious."
"Really?"
It's his first time to say it. For the past months in their two-year relationship, it has always been Andrea who voiced out her feelings towards her boyfriend. Luke would always stay quiet, sometimes he would act that he did not hear a word from her.
They even fought because of that. It was a rainy day and Luke's older sister has just given birth to a cute and adorable baby boy at the hospital. It was way past midnight and Luke dropped Andrea off at her apartment. After saying that she loved him with a kiss on his cheek, Luke only hummed in reply.
"Really? No response to what I said at all?" Andrea was starting to feel fed up with his silence. She knows what he's doing, he's dodging the topic as a whole.
Luke was surprised with her sudden outburst, thus he genuinely feels taken aback with it. "I hummed. You told me you loved me and I acknowledged it."
"Acknowledged, my ass," Andrea spits out under her breath but Luke heard it all too well.
"What's wrong?"
Andrea furrows her eyebrows together and places a hand on her hip. "What's wrong?! Luke, do you even hear yourself? We've been dating for more than a year and a half. Has it ever crossed your mind that you would grow to love me? Or that you would at least say your feelings for me?" She utters exasperatedly. And it was making Luke uncomfortable, being placed in the hot seat.
"I...I told you that it's difficult for me, Andrea," he whispers. "Its difficult to say these things out loud."
"And don't you think it's hard on me, too?" Andrea murmurs, on the verge of tears. "To be frank, there are times when I think that you're not happy being with me and the thought of that hurts."
Luke's chest clenches in pain after hearing that. His girlfriend has never lashed out like this and never said words like those before. Has he been taking her care and patience for granted all this time?
He reaches out to take a hold of Andrea's hand and squeezes it gently, looking into her teary eyes. "Wait for me," he says sincerely. "Please, wait a little longer for me."
And events of that night may have led to this exact time and place where Andrea finally heard the words she's been wanting to hear from the man she loves dearly.
"L-Luke," she utters in a shaky voice. "Please don't tell me that this is a joke."
"You know that I don't joke around." Luke's face falls, seeing the doubt wash over his girlfriend's face. He does not blame her for feeling that way though. He knows that it's because of him as to why she's acting this way. "I feel that I've been unfair to you and especially your feelings," he starts in a soft voice, "I don't want you to think that I'm taking advantage of you."
She furrows her eyebrows and vehemently shakes her head. "I know that you don't take advantage of me."
He sighs and shows a small grin which does not reach his eyes. "You don't have to say that. I know you're lying."
Andrea sets her eyes downcast, refusing to continue looking into the eyes of Luke.
He purses his lips, noticing how his girlfriend does not want to talk any further. And that's okay, he knows it's okay. Because he's aware that it's now his turn to talk, to tell her how much she means to him. "You know that I think too much of the future," he continues, gradually reaching out a hand to place his fingers under the chin of Andrea. He then raises her head up, making her look at him again. "I worry about it most of the time. But after tonight, seeing you take care of my sister's baby boy when she wanted to take an afternoon off, I realized that I worry so much about the future because you might not be in it. I'm scared that there might be a time wherein I won't be seeing you every day..."
And that is when one tear slips out the eye of Andrea. Then another one follows, and then she breaks down into soft sobs.
Luke starts to panic internally, he's not used to seeing Andrea cry like this. "D-Don't cry."
"How could I not?" Andrea musters to utter amidst her sniffles. Luke brushes his thumb under her eyes, hoping to wipe away the tears but they just keep on coming and falling.
"You know that I don't know what to do when you're like this." Luke bites his bottom lip then draws his arm back to unfasten the seatbelt around him before moving closer to Andrea, taking her in a warm embrace. Andrea buries her face in the crook of his neck, still crying and sniffling softly.
"I-I'm sorry for crying..."
"Don't be." Luke breaks off into a smile, rubbing the back of his girlfriend soothingly. "Sometimes it's nice to let our emotions go free. You taught me that."
Andrea pulls away a bit to meet the eyes of her boyfriend. "Do you really mean it, Luke?" She asks quietly, "Do you really love me?"
"I'm completely sure with what I said." Her boyfriend leans close to leave a chaste kiss on her lips. "And I never want to lose you...because if there is one constant thing the universe would offer to me, I want it to be you."
