Nick's POV
New Year's Eve.
I didn't think today was going to go like this, but here we are.
King was very distraught.
As soon as I walked into the room and got close enough, he latched onto me, pulling me down onto his lap and forcing me to stay there.
He hadn't said anything, and that was completely okay. I just sat in his lap with my hands massaging his scalp as he rested his head against my chest. The position was a bit uncomfortable, but so worth it as I felt King's breathing calm down more.
Wayne still was unresponsive, but his vitals seemed to be improving which was good. Since he was an older wolf, and the extent of his wounds would have been fatal to a human, it was taking him longer to heal.
I wish I could ease some of King's pain, or at least know what he was thinking. But he wasn't fucking talking to me. Every time I asked a question he either responded in grunts or didn't respond at all.
I was really concerned, but I was trying to shove it down.
I just...I'd never seen King so sad.
Helpless.
It sucked to witness it, as his mate.
We stayed like that for a good few hours until King shifted against me. I had honestly fallen asleep, our position changing so now my head was resting on King's chest.
He moved around a bit before stilling, and I was soon falling back asleep.
"Thank you. The Goddess truly blessed me with a perfect mate."
I snorted, not bothering to open my eyes as if, if I kept them closed, I could still technically be sleeping. It doesn't make sense, I know.
"No problem, big guy. What are-" I cut myself off with a yawn, "what are mates for?"
King got suspiciously still, his arms falling limp against my back. I could feel his heart slow down before rapidly speeding up.
I got up groggily, a little alarmed.
"King? What's wrong? Is your dad-?"
I turned around to look at Wayne but he was still asleep. I looked back at King with my brows furrowed. His eyes were trained on me, an unreadable expression on his face.
Then, his eyes glossed over. I just got more confused. Why was he mind linking som-
"You have a great ass."
My eyebrows shot up.
My fingers went to King's mouth, which was still shut. How did he do that?
"How did you say that but not move your mouth?" I asked, my fingers prodding at my boyfriends lips. He smiled, the most genuine one I'd seen in the past few hours, and smashed his lips against mine. I moaned weakly, shuffling my hips as the heat in my body flared up. Bad Nick, not the time.
King separated his lips from mine, the smile still big on his face. I smiled back at him, albeit confused.
"Why are we smiling?"
King shook his head, weaving his arms around my lower back and pulling me closer to him. I wrapped my arms around his neck, absentmindedly playing with the short curls there.
"Baby...I think you have the ability to mind link people."
My first reaction was disbelief.
My second reaction was to punch King. I refrained.
