Nick's POV
"Hey, King?"
It was later in the day and King and I were lounging in his office. Well, I was lounging. King was doing 'alpha' stuff. I didn't really get the logistics of it all.
King glanced at me from where he was sitting behind his desk, a stack of papers laid out in front of him. He gave me an easy smile that had butterflies swirling in my stomach. "Yes, love? What is it?"
I grew a bit anxious. I wanted to ask him, but I didn't know how to phrase it. Was it weird to feel like this? I cleared my throat, opening and closing my mouth a few times before I coughed.
"What are we?"
King snorted, finally taking his gaze off of the papers as he looked at me. I blushed under his heavy stare but said nothing. "We're mates."
I scowled. Leave it to King to be a smartass.
"That's not what I meant, jackass. I know we're mates."
King chuckled lightly, seeming thoroughly amused with my answer. No matter how many times I insulted him, he never got mad at me. I don't know why, but that shit pissed me off. Sometimes, I was looking for conflict.
"I'm just messing with you, baby. We're whatever you want us to be," King replied through his laughs.
I didn't say anything after that. I didn't want it to be up to me. It might be different to werewolves, but I liked stability and labels. I wanted King to be my boyfriend. We were practically dating already. I just liked the idea of being able to tell someone with surety that King and I were together.
That's when it dawned on me. I had accepted King. He was my mate, my other half. He was a werewolf, and I was okay with that. Wow. Progress, Nick. Progress.
"I want us to be dating. Officially. I want to be your boyfriend." I said it with confidence, but I was anything but.
Suddenly, I was being crushed in a hug by a giant. I could only grunt as King smothered my face in kisses.
The feel of his lips against my skin reminded me of something else. He was right, I hadn't kissed him yet. I don't really know why.
"Aww, of course you're my boyfriend. My heart belongs to you, only you. I didn't realize how important it was for you to label our relationship. Werewolves don't really see it in the same sense as humans, but we are dating, essentially. We started dating the moment you accepted me."
Aaaaaaaand cue the blush.
Me being the insecure asshole I am, I pushed him off with a grunt. "Alright, alright. Don't you have shit to do?" King placed one last kiss to my cheek and returned to his desk, plopping his big self down in his chair.
"I do, but you're more important."
Ack, my heart can't take this shit.
We fell into a comfortable silence for a while. I was on my phone hopping from app to app when King let out a frustrated groan.
I looked up to see a frown on his pretty face, his dark brows furrowed together as he looked at something on the papers. "Hey, sweetheart, can you come here for a second?"
"No." I said it as I got up anyway. I couldn't really deny King of anything he wanted, but I would complain.
King didn't seem to be in the mood for my teasing.
His dark gaze landed on me and I gulped, freezing in my spot. He rolled his eyes when I didn't make a move towards him. "Nick, seriously. Don't make me spank you." The horrified gasp that left my mouth could not be stopped.
