Joyce Carol Oates is an award-winning American author who was born in 1938. She published her first book in 1963 and has since published 58 novels, along with a number of plays, novellas, short stories, poetry, and nonfiction.
Oates is known for having written in a wide variety of genres and styles. Within her works, she typically portrays American individuals whose lives end in bloodshed and self-destruction due to larger forces beyond their control. Her books mix a realistic perspective of everyday life with horrific and even sensational depictions of violence.
