"There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed."

-Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway is an American novelist who was born on the outskirts of Chicago, IL in 1899. In 1954 he won a Nobel Prize for Literature. The masculinity that came through in his works, as well as his adventurous and widely publicized life, made him stand out among other writers of his time. It was also a key component in his great influence in both American and British literature.

Some of Hemingway's most notable works include (but are certainly not limited to):

The Old Man and the Sea (1952)

The Killers (1927)

For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940)

A Farewell to Arms (1929)

Ernest Hemingway's first love, Agnes von Kurowsky, who he met while in the hospital during World War I left him before they were wed. This lead him down the path to leave women before they had a chance to leave him. Agnes was also the muse for his female characters in A Very Short Story, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, and A Farewell To Arms.

This leads us to our discussion questions:

Do your personal experiences or people you meet bleed into what you write? Is it done intentionally or unintentionally?

As a reader, are there times you read a book and think, 'this story seems to be coming from a personal experience of the writer?'

When reading Wattpad stories do you like to hear from the author when a certain component of their story comes from personal experience? Or would you prefer to not know about the author's personal experience?

We also welcome any other discussion about Ernest Hemingway and his works.

If there is another author you would like to see a discussion on, please post your suggestion in the comments below for a chance to be featured in a future chapter!
