Why oh why did we leave the Caravan?? Varian thought furiously as he ran behind Rapunzel. All of them were running from a pack of wolves. Slayer Wolves, apparently, according to Eugene. Varian watched as he pulled out an empty canteen and placed three coins inside.
"Come on, this way!" he said, laughing as he shook the canteen next to his ear. Varian could barely hear the coins over the loud snarling and growling. Varian looked around and realized he was leading them to a dead end.
"Oh you've got to be kidding me." he muttered. Lance must have had the same thought because he began to panic.

"Dead end!" he yelled as the group came to a stop, "We're goners!" the group turned to face the wolves. "Aw, please, wolves, don't eat me!" he whimpered. Varian laughed softly. He hadn't truly gotten to know Lance but he seemed like a nice enough guy. "I'm too chewy!" he continued, the panic in his voice rising, "Oh who am I kidding, I'm probably moist and delicious."
As if on cue, the wolf in the front licked her lips.
Eugene spread his arms wide and said, "It's not a dead end, Lance. It's just got good acoustics." Then he lifted the canteen up and shook it. The loud clinking rang through the valley, making Varian's ears ache. Rapunzel, too, winced beside him. The wolves whined and dispersed, and everyone began to congratulate Eugene.
"That wasn't half bad, Eugene." Varian said to himself as Hook Foot dubbed Eugene the 'King of the Wild'. They went back to the caravan and began on the road again.

After about an hour, the caravan came to a stop. Varian floated out of the caravan to see why and groaned at the sight of a huge swamp. "You've got to be kidding me!" he said as his head fell into his hands. Rapunzel bit the inside of her cheek to stop the giggles rising in her throat.
"Okay, so the black rocks have led us to a swamp." Eugene said.
"Oh really, you don't say?" Varian muttered, coming to stand by Fidela.
Varian shhh he heard Rapunzel say in his mind. He rolled his eyes but turned his attention to Eugene again. He watched out of the corner of his eyes as Shorty came forward and filled his canteen with the swamp water. Lance made a gagging noise as Shorty drank the water. Or was it slime?
"So, 'King of the Wild'," Cassandra teased, "any suggestions on how to cross this thing?" With growing concern, they all watched Eugene approach the water and poke it with a stick. Just like everyone expected, an unknown tentacle reached out to grab Eugene. Rapunzel nearly ran forward but Varian shot her a look and she stood down. When Eugene got the tentacle off his arm, he jumped back.
