"I need you to date me for the next week."

You stare at your best friend. Brett Talbot lounges casually in the seat next to you, but underneath the cool exterior, you can see a slight tinge of nerves shifting beneath the skin. That, plus the fact that he practically sprinted across the room to throw himself in the chair next to you, tells you that this is something important, not just a joke meant to mess with you. Plus, Brett is Brett. He doesn't just ask people to date him like this.

You raise an eyebrow, looking up from your homework. "If this is your way of asking me out, I think it needs some work. I'm not really feeling wooed." Brett rolls his eyes. "It's not like that, you dork. We're friends, you know that." You lean forward, propping your chin up on your hand in an expression of studied disinterest. "Then why did you just ask me to date you?" Brett looks away for a second, as if steeling himself to continue. "My parents have invited me and a girlfriend over to their beach house for spring break. I may have, uh, misled them into thinking that I was dating you."

You stare at him. "How did you manage that?" Brett groans, leaning back in his chair and raising his eyes to the ceiling as if he's embarrassed to even share the story. "So, you know how I have a habit of not staying with one girl for too long?" You chuckle. "I'm familiar with it." Brett tosses a paper at you halfheartedly. "I'm going to ignore that because I need your help. Anyways, I wasn't about to tell my parents that and now I need a girlfriend to prove that I'm the upstanding, girls-respecting son they expect."

You fold your arms across your chest. "Why me? You know as well as I do that there are about a hundred girls in this very school who go to bed dreaming of the opportunity to date the captain of the lacrosse team." Brett gives you a look. "I need someone I can bring to my parents, not someone who's ready to propose marriage. You're the only one I can count on." You return his look. "What about Stacy, or Jacqueline, or-"

Brett cuts you off. "Don't tell me you actually think Jacqueline would manage to stay serious for more than a minute." You tilt your head in acknowledgement. "And I'm so much better?" Brett leans forward. "Exactly. You're the only one I know who would actually impress my parents. I need you to do this." You consider this. "You want me to pretend to date you for a week so that you can seem like a cool guy to your parents?"

Brett nods. "Perfect. You're all ready." He stands up despite your protests. "I'll see you after spring break starts!" He laughs at your hurried objections. "I never agreed to this!" Brett justs grins. "You're the best, Y/N. The very best. I'm so glad we're friends." You roll your eyes, sinking back into your chair in a huff. "I hate you." Brett flashes you a thumbs up from across the room, already heading towards the door. "No, you love me, remember?"

The door closes behind him, and you stare unseeingly at the table in front of you. You're going to pretend to be dating Brett Talbot, your best friend. The boy who's been your best friend for years. However, you can't stop a small smile at the thought. Brett trusts you above all the other girls at Devenford Prep because he knows you'll do this best at this. You would be lying to say that you just think of Brett as a friend, you haven't for a while.

It's practically impossible to not crush on Brett, and you're certainly not the only girl at Devenford with this problem. The only difference is that you're able to push your feelings aside, pretend you only see Brett as a friend. You've learned to slow your heartbeat so he can't tell if your pulse quickens when you see him, you tease him mercilessly and make sure he never suspects you love him. It hurts sometimes, when you have to pretend it doesn't bother you to see him in a corner with girls from your classes, but sometimes it lands you with times like this.

You have no idea how this spring break trip is going to go, but you have a feeling that it's at least going to be interesting.

Brett picks you up in the afternoon after a couple of days. You spend a pleasant drive down going over the logistics of the lie. You can keep most of it- you were friends for a while, none of that has to change. The only difference is that at some point Brett realizes he loved you, and you'd been dating ever since. Easy as it could possibly be, except for the fact that your part isn't entirely a lie. Well, at least you won't have problems pretending you love Brett. For you, it isn't an act at all.
