HE'D NEVER KNOWN DARKNESS LIKE THIS.
Or air so cold, so unforgiving.
He shivered. The air hung still around them, so thick and heavy it choked him when he tried to breathe. Energy buzzed through it. It stung his skin like electricity.
At first, it reminded him of the atmosphere in the towers.
But this was different. The darkness was empty, a hollowness that slowly dragged the light from his body. The cold was dread; the chill in his veins, the ice on his skin. He felt it in his soul, a cold shadow creeping through his chest. Twining round his limbs. Claiming more and more of him, one breath at a time, until his body and mind melted away, and became one with the emptiness.
Dark clouds swirled above, smoky grey smudges, undersides stained blood red. Long, spindly boughs stretched overhead, their branches silhouetted like cracks across the sky. He followed their paths down, branches twisting and mingling as they descended into the thick shadow below, as if they were borne from the darkness itself.
"Is this..." He barely dared whisper the words. The air tasted sharp and bitter, blood and ashes in his mouth. "Is this really Elete?"
His companion stared over the desolate scene before them. Below, debris floated by — twisted, rusted metal and shards of glass. And above, shattered gear fragments drifted across the darkness, flashing silver and bronze. Mangled stars in a broken sky.
Pieces of a tower that had once stood proud.
"No." His voice was a scratchy whisper, almost too quiet to be heard over the silence roaring in his ears. "Not anymore."
