"No Bread for Today"

JORGE: A FULL DAY'S TOIL.
A FULL DAY'S TOIL AND NOTHING TO SHOW:
A FULL FIELD OF SOIL AND NOTHING TO GROW.
I HAVE NOTHING TO PLANT IN MILLIONS OF ROWS.
A FULL DAY'S TOIL.

WHY DO MY FEET TAKE ME HOME?
         I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY.
         THERE'S BREAD FOR TOMORROW
         BUT NO BREAD TODAY.

I FEEL SO OLD.
I FEEL SO OLD AND THERE'S NOTHING I OWN.
ONLY MY FAMILY, THESE SEEDS THAT I'VE SOWN
AND WHAT CAN I GIVE THEM NOW THAT THEY'RE ALL GROWN?
I FEEL SO OLD.

WHY DO MY YEARS FEEL SO HEAVY
         AS MY YOUTH SLIPS AWAY?
         THERE'S BREAD FOR TOMORROW
         BUT NO BREAD TODAY.

NO FOOD TO EAT.
NO FOOD TO EAT AND LIFE MARCHES ON,
SO ANGRY AND QUICK AND RELENTLESSLY LONG
AND YOU SOMEHOW SURVIVE WHEN THE FOOD IS ALL GONE.
NO FOOD TO EAT.

         MANÁ, IN YOUR DISTANT HEAVEN
DO YOU HEAR WHEN I PRAY?
         THERE'S BREAD FOR TOMORROW
         BUT THERE'S NO BREAD TODAY.

(JORGE enters the village and is surrounded by the CAMPESINOS and the REVOLUTIONARIES as they share what little they have to eat. They do so with the ease of long acquaintance. PADRE eats with them as well.)

DIEGO: Hey, old man.

JORGE: Hey, Diego.

DIEGO: Two poderos, I hear. Come eat.

JORGE: Why eat when my family starves?

DIEGO: There's food enough for all, if only a little bit. Come, old man. Eat. Armando will fetch your family.

PADRE: You look like you could use a prayer, Jorge.

JORGE: As do you, Padre. As do you.

LUPE: We could all use a prayer, these days.

PADRE: Come, Jorge. And you too, Diego.

DIEGO: A prayer for love and war, Padre. Pray to Maná for love and war.

PADRE: (Laughing.) Love. What do any of us know about love? I'm a priest and all of you walk around with testicles ripe like oranges!

ARMANDO: And Diego's all juice and no seed!

DIEGO: Testicles like oranges and a penis like a tree! Pray for love and war, Padre. Love and war and a beautiful woman.

PADRE: You need more praying than I thought, Diego. Come, a prayer to Maná.
