"What's There to Hope For: Reprise"

JOMORRA: (offstage) TELL ME, WHAT'S THERE TO HOPE FOR?
(entering) WHY DOES HEAVEN ALWAYS FALL DOWN TO EARTH?

BOTH: WHY DO I EXPECT SOMETHING MORE?
TELL ME, WHAT'S THERE TO HOPE FOR?

JORGE: ALL OF THIS AND THEN NOTHING.
ALL THESE PASSIONS AND DREAMS FOR THIN AIR.
I BELIEVED IN HIS REVOLUTION,
I BELIEVED IN EVERYTHING!
AND ALL I AM LEFT WITH IS DESPAIR,
AS IF I HAD BREATHED AN ILLUSION.

TELL ME, WHAT'S THERE TO HOPE FOR?
THERE IS NOTHING, NOTHING IN ALL THIS EARTH,
NO REASON TO ASK ANYTHING MORE!
TELL ME, WHAT'S THERE TO HOPE FOR?

JOMORRA: Death and taxes, old man... Death and taxes.

POVERTY AND POWERLESSNESS
ARE POWERFUL THINGS, INDEED:
KINDER, MORE BEAUTIFUL
THAN ANYTHING
YOU COULD EVER NEED.
DON'T GIVE ME JUSTICE,
DON'T GIVE ME HOPE.
DON'T GIVE ME ANYTHING,
JUST LET ME COPE.

BOTH: TELL US, WHAT'S THERE TO HOPE FOR?
WHAT REASON'S THERE TO BE BORN TO THIS EARTH
TO SUFFER AND DIE BY THE SCORE?
TELL US... WHAT'S THERE TO HOPE FOR?

SALAMÓN: (offstage) Jorge, is that you?

(SALAMÓN enters.)

JORGE: ...I don't know anymore.

SALAMÓN: Where has everyone gone?

JORGE: Where does anyone go, Salamón?

(JORGE begins to exit, he and JOMORRA's ghost leaning on each other for support.)

SALAMÓN: Jorge, wait! ...Is something wrong?

JORGE: Is something right?

(There is a silence between them, then JORGE exits with the help of JOMORRA's ghost.)

SALAMÓN: Santiago...

(SALAMÓN heads into the coffee. He is soon surrounded by the CONTRA encampment and its white-masked members. Guns are trained on him. With rough hands, they search him for weapons and find he has none. He is pushed into SANTIAGO's presence. The others crowd in, jeering him loudly.)
