Monday morning Hinata was back at work and alternating between being happy remembering the amazing weekend he had with Kageyama and being annoyed that he was now back in Tokyo. They texted and talked while he was away, but it just wasn't the same. Hinata missed him and he admitted that he was a little pissy about the whole job thing that took Kags away Monday through Friday.
He must have had a sour look on his face because Yamaguchi asked him what was wrong. Just then the bell to the bakery rang and Oikawa sauntered in. Hinata answered Yamaguchi.
"Oh, nothing. Just thinking about Kageyama."
Oikawa had heard the last part. "Chibi-chan, are you talking about THE Kageyama?" Hinata looked at him questioningly.
"What do you mean?"
Oikawa answered, "Kageyama Tobio?"
Hinata was confused but answered anyway. "Yes. Do you know him?"
Oikawa scoffed. "Everyone in the tech industry knows him. Or anyone who follows the high society scene in Tokyo."
Hinata's eyes were wide open as he tried to process this information. What was Oikawa talking about?
Oikawa noticed his perplexed look and was surprised himself. "You know, tech wizard, CEO, one of Tokyo's top 30 under 30, goes to red carpet events with GQ models? That's why you were talking about him, right?"
Hinata's mouth was frozen open, his eyes wide as he took in the brunette's words. That can't be true, he thought. There must be another Kageyama. Right? It can't be MY Kageyama. Hinata seemed frozen on the spot so Yamaguchi got Oikawa's vanilla soy latte and watched him walk out before turning back to Hinata.
"Hinata? Are you okay?" Hinata seemed to shake from his trance and pulled out his phone. His hands were shaking as he typed the words "kageyama tobio tokyo" into the search engine. His search yielded millions of hits, top among them, pictures of Kageyama, HIS Kageyama, and articles about his super-successful company and his ridiculous net worth and pictures of him with very sophisticated, handsome men. Hinata's blood ran cold and he dropped the phone and ran into the back room.
Yamaguchi picked up the phone to examine what Hinata had seen and confirmed his suspicions. He motioned to Suga, indicating he was going to the back and asking Suga to cover the counter. Yams found Hinata sitting on the floor of the breakroom with his back to the wall. Tears were streaming down his face.
"Hinata," Yams said softly, "Are you okay?" Hinata continued to cry silently but didn't speak right away.
"I'm such a fucking idiot!" he finally said. Yamaguchi was surprised.
"Why would you say that? He's the one who lied. You didn't do anything wrong."
Hinata then slowly turned his face toward his friend. "I did. I fell for him. And now... he's not even who I thought he was. I. Am. An. Idiot."
Yamaguchi only shook his head. "This is not on you, Hinata. You should be angry at him, not at yourself."
"Oh, I am angry at him too. I thought .... I thought there might be something there. I guess I was just being stupid and naiive." Neither spoke for a while.
After a few minutes, Hinata's tears stopped flowing and he didn't feel quite as angry anymore. He only felt... numb. Well, that was okay. He was used to numb. He could do numb. He got up, brushing off the seat of his pants, and said to Yams:
"Well, enough of that shit. I'm done with him. I'll get over it. I've gotten over worse." The last was said to convince himself as much as Yams.
Hinata walked back to the front of the bakery, picked up his discarded phone from the counter, copied the link to one of the prominent articles, and opened a text thread to Kageyama.
Hinata: You're a fucking liar. I'm done. (website)
He felt some small satisfaction, shoved his phone into his pocket and went back to work, determined to put that lying asshole out of his mind. Forever.
***************
Kageyama was typing an email in his office when he heard a text come in. He knew it was from Hinata because of the special tone he assigned to his tangerine's messages. He was smiling as he entered his passcode and opened the message, but his smile quickly died. Fuck.
Tangerine: You're a fucking liar. I'm done. (website)
Kags: Hinata, I'm sorry. Let me explain.
Tangerine: Nothing to explain. You're an asshole. It's over.
Kags: Hinata, please. Can we talk?
After a few minutes, he got no response so he tried to call Hinata's number. It went to voicemail. Kageyama swore under his breath. This was bad.
He knew he had fucked up. He hadn't intentionally kept his job and wealth from Hinata. At first, he thought it was just a temporary thing between them. He was only going to be in Miyagi a week and Hinata was a pleasant distraction. Then he would go back to Tokyo and never see him again. He never intended to pursue anything beyond that, so he rationalized that Hinata didn't need to know all the details of his life.
Somewhere in the back of his brain he admitted that he should have been more forthcoming about himself as their relationship -- however it was defined -- progressed. But he hadn't and now Hinata, understandably, felt betrayed.
Yep. He fucked up alright. Now what? He couldn't go back to Miyagi until Friday. He had a really busy week with lots of executive level meetings he could not miss. He was going to have to either talk to Hinata on the phone before Friday. Or wait till Friday. Four fucking days away.
He picked up the phone and tried texting again.
Kags: Hinata, please. I can explain. I know you're mad but please give me a chance.
Five minutes passed. Then ten. No response. He called and knew Hinata wouldn't pick up but figured he'd leave a voicemail.
"Hinata, it's me. I'm really sorry. Listen, I didn't tell you at first because I didn't think we would have this... Relationship. I didn't know we were going to be... Involved to this extent. I... I'm sorry I didn't tell you after that. I just... I don't know why. But I didn't mean to hurt you and I'm sorry. Please talk to me. I'm really sorry."
He cut off his message after that and decided that was all he could do for the time being. He turned back to his work, a cold empty feeling filing his chest, and prayed that Hinata would listen to the message and call him back. If that didn't happen, well, Kageyama refused to think about that possibility right now.
