CHAPTER FIFTY-THREE

TRUE PAIN spreads throughout your body like a disease. It uses many pathways; physical, mental, and emotional. It sinks into the skin and spreads like wildfire throughout your body, and it burns everything it touches.

It can be so intense that you feel like it'll never stop. You may convince yourself that there is no way to stop the pain you think you deserve. It fills you like poison. At times it feels there is no way out of it.

Aislin was enduring pain, so was Leland. Their pain came from different sources, but they both were drowning in it.

Aislin had been betrayed by the one person she thought would be there for her the rest of her days; stabbed in the back.

No matter where we go, betrayal is endemic. It's a byproduct of human imperfection. Everyone will experience it in some form; from our closest family members, our friends, our lovers, or even our pets. It's simply unavoidable. Yet, despite the deception, despite the lies, the betrayal, we still open our hearts to others.

A liar knowingly speaks falsehoods, but one who distorts the truth to deceive is a craftsman of destruction. They can become the most dangerous members of society. They manipulate the best affections of our nature and desecrate society's most sacred obligations.

In spite of all the pain, Aislin could distinguish only a single emotion.

She was angry.

Angry at Elowen, at herself, her mother, the world, angry at anything and everything. She had been lied to far too often. It was time to change that.

She wasn't quite sure what needed to be changed, but she would figure it out. She always did.

Leland was in just as much pain. What had appeared to be a dream come true had morphed into a nightmare. Aislin was taken from him and he hadn't been able to do anything about it. He was beating himself up for it. He wasn't strong enough to save her. If he did more, maybe he could have. He should have saved her. Then maybe she'd be in his arms without a worry in the world.

Instead, he felt utterly useless as he lay in silence on his bed, staring at the empty ceiling above his head.

That fateful night, both Aislin and Leland were poisoned. Aislin recovered quickly as she had trained her body to resist most poisons, but it was quite the opposite for Leland. Not only had the drug been effective, but he had also had an allergic reaction to it. It took him two days to fully recover control of his limbs.

A dreary silence has consumed the castle as the days had passed. Aislin's disappearance had impacted every occupant in some way.

The night sky above teemed with stars. Beams of moonlight grazed past the window glass and into the room Leland was currently occupying. He lifted himself off the bed and stumbled towards the window slowly.

As he looked out the window at the darkness he was reminded of Aislins rigorous training in the castle's courtyard, where he had found her having a panic attack. He looked up at the stars and was remembered how she glowed under the light of the moon that night they had kept watch together.

Something in his stomach stirred. It felt like a burst of energy coursing through his veins. His heart pounded harder and his breaths became deeper and heavier. His body burned with a fit of fiery anger that he couldn't fully articulate.

He had a bone to pick with whoever had the nerve to take her from him, and he'd stop at nothing to find her.
