Kanai Athena

"Babe! Love, come here it's important!" I hear Kei shout from upstairs.

I switch the tv off, humming as I walk upstairs and into our room. As soon as I walk in my face drops and I stare at Kei in amusement mixed with horror.

"So I tried following a YouTube tutorial on how to put this on-"

"MY WIG?!" I exclaim, walking over to him.

He's sitting on our bed, arms crossed with a 40inch wig resting on his head.

"Listen baby." He purses his lips and I snort before going quiet. "You have braids right now and I wanted to see what the hell is was like putting on a wig because you wear them sometimes even though your hair is already kind of long and it's pretty but by that's beside the point." He holds up a hand and quickly gets back on track.

"Why are there so many steps? Why is it so hard to get off?" He whines and I facepalm before dragging him to the bathroom to help.

"You're so annoying. A menace, really." I make him sit down as I begin taking the wig off. "HEY! THIS IS NEW. I NEVER EVEN WORE IT BEFORE."

"It's okay." Kei hums and I cup his cheeks, smooshing them together.

"No. It's really not."

"I'm going to keep this short." My mom purses her lips, setting her cup of tea down as she looks at Kei and I. "When am I getting grandchildren?"

"Grandchildren?!" I look at her like she's crazy. "You talking plural???"

"I'm getting old here Athena! Yes, I want grandchildren." She pouts.

Mom is obsessed with me having kids. Ever since Kei and I got married- especially now since we graduated college a few months ago- she's been harassing us about kids.

I mean, I get it. I really do. She isn't able to have kids of her own, so she was really happy that my father had me when they met. Of course they had started dating before I was introduced to her, but I think him having a kid played some type of small factor in their marriage.

But because she's unable to bear children, it ended up just being me as an only child. However, the thing is...

"Kei and I don't really want kids." I repeat for the millionth time. "They're expensive, and they're messy, and they stink, they're needy-"

"They turn ungrateful." Kei adds and I furiously nod.

"So true bestie." I pat his back, then get a bit more serious so I can prove my point. "And if Kei and I have a kid, they'll be half black. Do you really want your grandchildren to be subjected to the racism that dad and I go through on a daily basis? Weird stares, getting called a Half (derogatory) and other names?"

"That would be so unfortunat- wait. Are you going through a tough time here?" Kei looks at me and I quickly peck his lips, grinning.

"Shhh. I'm used to the micro aggressions." I say before turning back to my mother.

"But bearing children is such a wonderful gift! Being a parent is so beautiful. I love being your mom, and I'm sure your baby will love me being their mom's mom!" She giggles and I smile softly, chuckling.

"We'll think about it. How's that sound?" Kei offers and she perks up.

"Sounds great!"

After having our tea and a few more mentions of having children, my parents leave.
