The whip flashed through the air, arcing over Rory and Matt again and again. Stephen half-acted his trepidation, cowering at the back of the set and flinching every time the leather slapped the floor near his feet. Admittedly, he was starting to think his plan was backfiring, especially since he was a lot more in the firing line than he had expected.

She kept going for a few more strokes and then came to a stop, leaving everyone to focus on the two members of the crew who had been acting as her obstacle. Unfortunately, in a final flourish, she flicked the whip upwards, a swish preceding a stinging pain across Stephen's cheek. He turned his head away instinctively, letting out nothing more than a surprised exhalation and brought his hand up to rub the stinging skin, as if his fingers could pull away the tingling pain.

It took a second for people to notice, at which point he was quick to play it off, insisting to the act that he was fine, that it had only been the very end that had caught him. Three apologies later, she was out of the door.

Then there was the crew to deal with. He smiled sheepishly, laughed off the pain and pretended it served him right for trying to get two other members of the crew whipped in the face in the name of entertainment. Moving his jaw experimentally probably didn't help his case but, at the end of the day, there was nothing anyone could say to contradict him.

Truthfully, he felt a little stupid. He had certainly had bad ideas on the show in the past, spurred on by the unnecessary urge in his head to draw in more of a crowd, to really make the show something to be proud of. And yes, that had all been a running joke to practically everyone but he was always being partially honest when he did things to boost their ratings. Of course, he'd been confident that nothing disastrous would happen to the guys he'd had stood in the way of the whip but maybe he should have thought about his own position in the whole thing.

They got through another interview before anyone mentioned it again. Then they were 'touching up' his make-up which roughly translated to covering up the slowly reddening mark on the side of his face. He got a sympathetic smile from the make-up lady and wrinkled his nose up as surreptitiously as possible whenever the brush on his face caused the aching to flare up.
