Once Flames thought everyone had fallen asleep, they snuck out a window and up to the roof with a candle and matches.
They sat down by the railing, sparking up the wick and watching the flame dance in the midnight breeze.
Paint turned over in their bed, shivering as a cool draft blew in.
They sat up quietly, wrapping the thin blanket tight around their shoulders with a wince.
They saw the window open, that usually meant one thing.
Flames looked up at the stars, silently tracing constellations in their mind.
They heard footsteps behind them.
"Flames?"
They quickly tried their best to hide, forgetting that it's possible to blow out a candle and instead just staring at it.
"It's jus' me, Paint." They sat down nearby, their face barely illuminated in the dim candle light.
"You'se ok?"
Flames slowly scooted towards them, "Uh, I'm just thinking..."
"Ok." Paint wrapped the blanket around their friend's shoulder, huddling close.
They sat in silence, Flames zoned out and Paint sent tiny puffs of breath towards the fire to make it dance.
"You'se really ok?" They pulled away slightly, looking at Flames' caramel eyes.
They didn't return the gaze, instead simply nodding and fidgeting with their shirt.
"You'se know you can tell me anything."
"I know..."
"Alright, you'se wanna go inside or stay out?"
Flames whispered a quiet, "Here..."
"Ok," Paint wrapped them in a hug from behind, resting their chin on Flames' shoulder.
Flames leaned back into their chest, eventually falling asleep.
After a few minutes Paint could hear those familiar soft snores.
"Cute..." They blushed a tiny bit.
'They'se don't like you like that Paint, stop.' They mentally scolded themself, sighing and blowing out the candle.
They eventually managed, with much pain, to get Flames inside and to bed.
After making sure their glasses were safe, Paint snuggled up under their thin covers and drifted off to sleep.
