Although Buddhism believes in the afterlife, still there is no concept of heaven and hell. They commonly believe in rebirth. Buddhists do not consider death to be an end in the same way practitioners of many other religions do. Instead, they see death as a recurring step in an ongoing process of death and rebirth. According to them we take birth until the time our spirit doesn't understand the nature of life and gains nirvana ( salvation).

Buddhists believe that human beings are born and reborn an infinite number of times until they achieve Nirvana. In Buddhism, the reincarnation process of being reborn is associated with suffering and called samsara
According to them, a person 's lifetime deeds decide what he is going to be in the next life and we can bear as any living beings or would they receive Nirvana( doesn't matter if it is human or animal). This could be discerned from one of the teachings present in Dharmpada which roughly means

There are also Buddhists who believe in two versions of reincarnation. One is the involuntary reincarnation that occurs due to someone’s karma. Another is a voluntary form of reincarnation, in which a person might choose rebirth to achieve some purpose they can only fulfil during life
