"Leave us alone, we did nothing to you!" I shout, putting my arms in a protective stance in front of my friend. The bullies laughed, not taking any notice of me, instead, smashed at Kai, who yelped as one of the rocks they threw scraped against their arm.

No no no no no... I thought, rushing over to them, quickly patching up the bloody wound. The bigger kids left, saying that I was nothing without my friend and all that. It made me enraged that they hurt my friend like this.

"A-are you okay, Kai?" I asked, propping them against my arm. I wiped the blood off their arm, making them wince. "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean it..."

Kai stirred for a moment, then blinked their dark indigo eyes. "What's going on...?" they mutter in a small voice. "...where are we?"

"Shh, it's okay, don't you worry about a thing, everything is fine," I whisper, taking hold of them and rushing quickly to the hospital. I had already called with the phone I had on hand, but I couldn't bear leaving Kai alone by themselves.

The doctors and nurses quickly took us into the examination room, and I awaited for any reports in the waiting room. The clock ticked with suspense, I was getting worried by the second.

Finally, a doctor walked out, holding a clipboard and a pen. "Lukey?"

I perked up hearing my name. "Are they okay?"

"Yes, Kai's doing fine," he smiled. "Come and follow me."

I followed them down the long hallway, glancing at the many rooms located for appointments and medical exams. Finally, we arrived at a room, where I could see my friend Kai upright on the patient's chair. "Hey, Lukey," they said cheerfully, waving.

"Yep, they seem alright enough to go home now," one of the doctors nearby announced, smiling at the two of us. "Just be safe this time, alright? Take it easy."

"Thank you!" I called as we walked out of the hospital.

Kai yawned. "Did I miss something or what?" they ask.

"Nah, you didn't miss anything," I responded. "I'm just glad you're alright and all that."

"Well, if you're directing that to me, I'm afraid I'm not the one to thank," they said. "I mean, all I did was take a quick nap, that's all. Who was the one to carry me all the way to the hospital and ward off those bullies?"

"Still, at least you helped and didn't die, that should count for something," I said a bit teasingly.

"But you were the one to do everything else. That should count for something," they repeated, laughing. "Thanks for that."

"Friends are supposed to stick up for each other, aren't they?" I responded with a smile. Kai smiled back, which made me a bit happy to look at.

I then heard voices behind me. "Oh look, it's the boyfriend and girlfriend. What a lovely pair."

I growled under my breath. Them again. They kept pressing my buttons at every single moment. Then, I heard Kai behind me. "Hey! Pick on somebody your own size!"

"Heh, now you need your petty little girlfriend to stick up for you? How pathetic," they laugh, stepping in front of us with smirks plastered over their faces.

"Leave. Them. Alone." I snarled, standing up.

"Chill, you weirdos, it's not like we did anything," they said, walking away with a last glance.

"T-thanks," Kai said as I helped them up.

"Anytime," I replied. "As I said before, friends have to stick for one another."

I took their hand and we walked home together. And from then on, I became more protective of my friends, especially Kai, because I felt that it was my job to keep them safe and sound. Better easier said than done at certain times, but they all have ended one way or another.
