Relationship between oxygen partial pressure & affinity/saturation of hemoglobin

- positive correlation

- as oxygen partial pressure increases, affinity/ saturation of hemoglobin increases

- the correlation is not linear but is curved [produces an S shaped, sigmoid curve called oxygen dissociation curve]

- middle portion of ODC had a steep gradient so when inspiring tissues change from resting to active and partial pressure of oxygen falls, there is a large drop of affinity, so more oxygen would be delivered to the respiring tissues.
