The first few minutes were, well, hell.
Diego put you down but then you slipped on the incline deeper into the fog-filled cave, hit a stalagmite just for it to snap and nearly impale you. But it didn't stop there. You kept sliding down, down, down, till you felt the ground underneath you disappear, indicating a cliff was there.
You're damn well lucky Diego was so fast, reaching down and grabbing onto you before you fell down into the depths. When he pulled you up, you were hurting and shaking, thoroughly shook.
"M-Maybe we should go back..." you told him.
"Why?" He asked.
"What if we can't get back?" You add. "Just look at that drop..."
He leans forward over the cliff, shrugging as he reached down and unbuckled his belt, snapping it off. He looped it around you and squeezed it tight, using the excess to tether you to his wrist. He made sure it was secure before letting go of the belt so he had both hands, pulling off the chains from his cloak while he looked for a good spot in the cave's ceiling.
You feel some tiny pebbles come down the slope and touch your ankles. "Diego I think someone is coming."
"Interesting." He replies. "Now come on."
You look back at him and he has organized a pulley system, hanging in the air by his chains around his waist and leather straps on his thighs which are holding him in a sitting position.
"Is it safe?" You ask.
"What's my name?"
"How does this-"
"What's my name?" He asks again, his tone sterner than before.
"Diego..?"
"Si, Diego-mother-fucking-Matterazzi." He grabs the tether belt he put on your waist and pulls you off the cliff, quickly hoisting you to his lap, barely giving you any time to scream. "See? Safe."
You watch the veins and muscles in his arms work while he keeps the slack tight, steadily lowering the two of you down into the dark depths. He feels you shaking and uses his other hand to push your ear against his built chest.
"Just listen." He says, looking down to make sure he isn't going to hit anything while you blush badly.
"Umm... A-Alright..." you answer and go quiet to listen to his heartbeat. But there is no heartbeat, but instead a gentle sound that sounded like someone gently breathing through a flute. It was very slow, too. "Why does it sound like that?"
"It's a long story." He answered, blowing into his hand, a gentle flame appearing that lit up the darkness you were surrounded in. The walls of the descent moved and hundreds of eyes opened up, staring at you. Or Diego. Or maybe both.
But he seemed unbothered, even when there was a slimy sound as arms with multiple hands formed to reach out to you.
"Tasty..." a voice from deep down below said, the walls trembling with the vibrato of its tones.
The hands reached out and grasped the chains above you and shook them, giving Diego a thorough jangle. But he stayed steady, still holding onto you so you didn't fall. With the fire in hand, he gripped the chain, flames climbing up the links to scorch the hands. That same voice screeched, pulling the hands back while everything shook violently.
"What are you doing here?!"
"I've come to kick some bastard's ass for fucking with (Y/N)!" Diego shouted back but it wasn't his voice. You've heard that he could perfectly mimic anyone's voice but didn't believe it until now.
"L-Lex?"
"What's your name?"
"J-Jaeger..."
Diego's nose scrunches while he stares at the darkness in defiance. "Jaeger..." he growls, still in Lex's voice which is so incredibly deep that it sounds like it hurts to imitate. "Call off your demons from (Y/N)'s spirit and I will spare you my wrath."
"Y-Yes, of course..."
"Good." Diego rolls his eyes. "Don't make me come back." And effortlessly, Diego grabs that chain with both hands and pulls, lifting the two of you up.
When outside the gates, Apollo and Ike are laying in the grass together, Ike pecking at Apollo's snout. The two get up when seeing you and Diego.
"Let's get the fuck out of here." Diego growls. And just like that, everything around you pulls hard, giving you a heavy sense of whiplash when you're pulled back into your real body.
Above you, Diego stops floating and hits the floor next to you hard. Already, he doesn't seem like himself.
Ike is up, handing Diego a pack of cigs and a lighter. But Diego is so shaky he can't get one. So you reach out and help him, putting a cig in his mouth and lighting it for him.
You and Apollo (realm bridges) and Ike (a celestial) were made for inter-realm travel. Diego is not so every time you spend past a certain amount of time in another realm, it takes its toll on him. The longer he is out there, the more his soul drifts away and becomes harder to pull back. Sometimes not all of it comes back.
As far as you know, this is the longest he's ever been out.
You didn't notice Uvo standing there till he cleared his throat, Melchior next to him. Diego drearily looked up, his eyes dull and hazy. "Can I help you?" He asks, his voice particularly husky but not wavering. Despite his physical condition, his tone is still firm.
"All the decorations are set up and ready." Melchior says.
Diego nods while taking a long drag, turning away from you to exhale before managing to stand. Apollo tries to support him but Diego slaps his hands away. "Then initiate the surprise and go enjoy yourselves. I'll be there after a while."
It takes a moment before you leave the room with Uvo to head to the lounge where everyone else is waiting to surprise Lex. Everyone else follows, including Diego who takes his time but turns a different hall instead of going to the lounge. He's probably just going to take a shower and clean up before the party.
