Chapter #45 - Glimmer

Even though they obviously weren't, the weight of the six scrolls felt heavy in Glimmer's hands, like the gravity of her thoughts were pulling them down. Of course, she'd come to help Sophie translate them. But there was also something else she was preparing to explain.

Two 'something else's, actually.

Glimmer would start with the easier one.

"I realized something," she said sourly, hoping her nerves were as well-masked as her face underneath the hood. Though with her memories back now, she was internally itching to destroy that cloak. "Stellarlune in their genes is what gives certain humans abilities, right?"

Sophie herself seemed slightly dazed, gazing absentmindedly at the scrolls— Glimmer gave a small sigh of impatience— but her focus shot up when she heard the question. "Yeah. Why are you asking?"

Sophie's parents were in earshot, but that was fine. For now.

"I was thinking about the forgotten memory we saw. Vespera said it puts humans' true potential— or the dormant abilities— into their genes. And I remembered something Gisela said, that Vespera used to do experiments on humans in her Nightfall or whatever. So maybe stellarlune was involved with those, and now the descendants of the people who endured the tests have it in their DNA. They're the ones with dormant abilities."

She had been considering it all day, so the words came out rapidly.

Sophie sucked in a breath.

"That... would make sense." She rubbed her temples in a moonlark-y thoughtful way, "I honestly thought Vespera had just done experiments about human ruthlessness, but I guess not."

"Y'know, it would be appreciated if you at least said: oh, thanks for figuring that out, Glimmer."

"I'd be more likely to say that if I actually knew who you were," she retorted.

Glimmer flinched.

Sophie didn't

"Nevermind, it's... I know you don't want to reveal your identity. So, are you ready to tell me what some of the code-words in these mean?" Sophie scanned the scrolls, which contained what most would call gibberish symbols and were slightly charred from the storehouse burning.

Glimmer paused, "There's something the scrolls might mention. And since you're gonna be surprised anyway, I might as well tell you before we read them."

She had a quick silent hope that Sophie would understand the 'test subject' situation better than most.

Of course, she'd never experienced the joys of amnesia.

Glimmer shoved it all aside, inhaling sharply. She was ready. Tearing off her hood, she revealed black hair with the slightest hint of auburn, countless freckles dusting her face, and...

Deep brown eyes.

Sophie squinted at them, as if first wondering they were some sort of dark blue.

They weren't.

"I have to explain something," Glimmer— Eleanor— said.
