I don't know how it happened. I don't know who did it, or why. All I know is that I woke up to a crumbling roof with no one in the room. I grab my katana and a pistol before climbing out the window, just before the building started to collapse. When I make it outside, I see no one. Everyone probably went down with the school. I begin to walk, when a hand grabs my ankle. I see a Z.
I recognize them from my second year of middle school. His name was Clay. He was a Z now. The lower half of his body is crushed beneath stone. He was using one hand to claw his way out, the other holding his food in place. I am the food. I cut off his hand, wrestle the hand off my leg and begin to run. I run to the other building, the cafeteria, to find it completely vacant. I see the gate had been reduced to ashes.
I don't know at all what happened, but it must have been a bomb or some type of explosive. Making my way through the gate, I see a truck with the door open. I rush towards it, hoping to make an escape. Just as I start to climb into the truck, a shot goes off.
It's numb. I can't feel anything. It takes me a second to register the pain. Then it hits me. My leg turns into fire as I fall back, landing hard on the ground. Not letting myself stay dazed, I try to sit up, but the pain gives me a headache. I pull myself away from the car and see two people, a man and a woman.
"Sorry, sweetheart," the woman says as the man climbs in. "But we can't let you take our vehicle."
My only response was moving away to avoid being run over by the truck. My leg hurt when I moved it, but I pushed myself to my feet and limped towards the shade.
"Kat!" I heard 10K's voice from across the lot.
I opened my eyes, expecting to see him and Rose and Zach all together and safe, but I found only 10K. I was slightly disappointed, and I felt ashamed immediately. 10K rushed over to me, his hands resting on my shoulder.
"Are you okay?" Then he looked down, seeing the gun wound. He muttered a small curse under his breath before picking me up. It startled me and I nearly hit him, but he was carrying me to another vehicle. He put me in the backseat, and my stuff and his stuff in the front. He stayed fished into a bag, pulling out some medical supplies. I knew 10K was good at surviving, but the one thing he had no clue about was medicine. He only knew a few things, but not much. 10K pulled out a bandage and wrapped it around my leg, so it would stop bleeding.
"Just sit back," 10K said uneasily as he took the drivers seat. "I'll get someone who knows what to do."
I nodded, before laying back and closing my eyes.
