They all went to work the next day, and Richard approached Meredith. "Good news, Grey. I have a fellowship position here for you." He said with a smile.
"Really? You do?" Meredith asked with a grin. Richard nodded. "You can start neuro today, either on dereks or Amelias. I trust your up to speed on neuro procedures?" He asked.
"Yes. Derek and I talk about his procedures all the time." Meredith responded. "Good. Make sure to ask for help if you need it." Richard said. "Thank you, chief." Meredith said gratefully. Richard nodded as Meredith left the room.
"What's this I hear about you switching to neuro?" Alex asked as he came up and walked alongside her. "Yeah." Meredith responded. "You are? Why?" Alex asked.
"I would've done neuro had the trial never happened." Meredith admitted. "Good for you, Mer. How's Derek feeling about it?" He asked. "He's good. He wants me to do it." She replied.
"Good. Good luck Mer." Alex said, leaving.
Meredith had a smile plastered to her face as she found Derek at a nurses station. "Ah, dr Grey. You're on my service today." Derek said professionally. "Yes I am Dr Shepherd." Meredith replied with a giggle.
"These scans are from her last visit. What do you see?" Derek quizzed. Meredith held them up to the light and looked at them. "It's a glioblastoma." Meredith said confidently.
"That's right. These are the scans from this morning." Derek said, handing her a new set. "Wow. It's grown a lot. It's operable, right?" Meredith asked.
"It is. Surgery is scheduled at 12. You have a few hours to study up on it. We're gonna round now." Derek responded. "Okay Dr Shepherd." Meredith said.

They got to the patients room and began rounds. "Mrs Mitchell, this is Dr Grey." Derek introduced. "Wait, aren't you a general surgeon? My son came here a few years ago." Mrs Mitchell asked.
"I am. But I'm also working to be a neurosurgeon." Meredith replied. "Ohhh. That's great, dear. Good for you." She said. "Thanks." Meredith responded.
After rounds, Meredith went to the tunnels to have some peace and quiet while she read up on her surgery.
As she looked at the scans once more. Her phone started to ring and she picked it up. "Cristina, hey." Meredith said.
"Hey Mer. Alex told me you're switching to neuro. Want to spend more time with mcdreamy?" Cristina asked.
Meredith chuckled. "Yes, and because I love neurology." She replied. "More than general? Are you going to be double board certified?" Cristina asked.
"Yes to both. Richard offered me a fellowship position here and I just have to pass my boards." Meredith explained.
"That's great, Mer. By the way in case you cared, Ross and I are sex friends again." Cristina said casually. "What? Why didn't you tell me?" Meredith exclaimed.
"It's not a big deal. He's good." She answered.
"Cristina." Meredith laughed. "I gotta go. I have a double bypass surgery. See you later Mer." Cristina said. "Bye." Meredith responded, going back to her research.

A few hours later, Meredith and Derek were scrubbing in. "You ready for this?" He asked. "Yeah." She replied. "Don't be nervous. You got this." Derek said, knowing what she was thinking.
Meredith nodded as they entered the scrub room. "Want to make the first cut?" Derek offered. Meredith nodded and easily cut along the dotted line on the patients scalp.
"Good." Derek murmured, dabbing up the blood. "Retract this." He said. Meredith took the retractors and pulled the skin.
"See it?" Derek asked. "It's huge." Meredith commented. "It is. But all we have to do is make clean margins and cut that thing right out." Derek replied.
Meredith watched her husband in awe. She truly loved brains. It was so interesting. Derek cut along the tumor and stopped when he was done.
"Want to pull it out?" He asked. "Really?" Meredith asked in shock. "Really." He responded. She nodded and grabbed the clamp.
"Just a small pull and it should come on out." Derek explained. Meredith nodded and managed to pull out the tumor. "Everything looks clear." She said, putting the tumor into a basin.
"Lets close up. Congratulations on your first neuro procedure, dr Grey." Derek said with a proud smile. "Thank you Dr Shepherd." Meredith responded.
•••
Meredith exited the scrub room, Derek following her behind. "You did great." Derek said, giving her a big hug. "Thanks." She replied, kissing him gently.
"You know, you calling me Dr Grey got my all hot and bothered in there. And since it was my first neuro procedure as a fellow...I think we should celebrate." Meredith said with a smirk, moving her pointer finger up and down his chest.
"I think that's a great idea, Dr Grey." Derek responded huskily, putting his arm around her waist and pulling her into an on call room.
•••
About a little while later, the two of them laid in bed togetehr. "That...that was good." Meredith panted, putting her head on his chest.
"Yes it was." Derek agreed. "I'm so proud of you." Derek murmured, absentmindedly rubbing her stomach. "I know it's my fault you didn't go in to the neuro in the first place. And I'm sorry for that, but I'm so glad your going into neuro now." He said.
"It wasn't your fault, Derek. I screwed up, I know that and I had to choose my family or my career. I wasn't gonna be like my mother. You, Zo, and Bails come before everything." Meredith said genuinely.
"Oh, I love you." Derek breathed.
"I love you too. Dr Shepherd." Meredith teased.
