Chapter two: National City* * *
Moving a company across the country took months, Lena discovered. It had been a tiring combination of endless meetings and flying back and forth from Metropolis to National City when strictly necessary to simultaneously ensure that the relocation happened smoothly while still continuing to fulfil her duties as the acting CEO. Now that the move was done, Lena could say it was worth every penny and every strand of hair turned grey caused by the stress of the previous months. Through it all, Lena and Sam's friendship had evolved and the Luthor was indescribably glad to have her best friend / CFO's support during these changes.
Her first order of business in National City was catching up with old friends. As soon as she was able to, she planned a lunch with Winn Schott and with his blessing, invited Sam to the occasion.
The pair had been waiting for twenty minutes in front of the building housing the media company the computational engineer was working at and Lena was growing impatient. Admittedly, Winn had never been good at arriving on time so his lateness shouldn't have come as a surprise.
Lena checked her watch and huffed. 'I swear to God, I'm going to kill Winn if he forgot to put our lunch on his calendar.'
'Relax,' Sam told her. 'I'm sure he'll be down in a second.'
'I don't have a second. I have a meeting at 2 pm and I don't feel like being late to it,' Lena retorted.
'Geez. Somebody values their time. It's barely 1 o'clock, you'll be fine,' the brunette guaranteed, clearly not worried about lacking time.
'I'm going to call him. Again,' the Luthor announced before she bumped into someone as she stepped away to phone her friend. 'I'm sorry,' she quickly apologised at the same time the other person said, 'excuse me.'
Lena froze when she heard the voice. 'Kara?' How her genius-level brain had forgotten about the fact that Kara also worked at CatCo, she didn't know.
'Lena?' Kara for her part, sounded equally surprised by her presence. 'What are you doing here? At CatCo?'
'I'm having lunch with Winn, or I would be if he actually showed up,' Lena admitted.
'I'm on my way in. I'll tell him you're waiting,' the blonde offered.
'Oh, that would be great,' Lena told her, realising they had reached the end of their conversation and the fact disappointing her. 'Thank you, Kara.'
'Hey, Kara, right?' Sam jumped in before the reporter could walk away. 'Why don't you join us?'
The two college sweethearts exchanged glances. 'I actually made plans with Alex today,' Kara informed uncertainly.
'Your girlfriend can come too,' Sam welcomed and had it been appropriate to do so in public, Lena would've facepalmed in that exact moment.
'Alex is my sister,' Kara clarified uncomfortably and while having a yet to be identified woman invite her to lunch probably made things awkward, Lena knew the blonde too well to know that that wasn't what was holding her back.
'You should come,' Lena told her with a soft smile, hoping the blonde could still read her well enough to realise that she wanted her to come.
Kara stayed quiet for a moment, her blue eyes fixed on Lena as if she was searching for something, anger or a trace of dishonesty. Finally, she nodded, 'I need to drop some things off at my office but I'll be back soon, with Winn. Alex should be on her way. She's around my height, red hair, and she's probably wearing a white shirt and navy blue pants since the FBI won't let her wear anything else.'
