Chapter four: Not what friends are for
* * *
'What are friends for?'
Lena noticed with increasing frustration that the phrase had become Kara's personal tagline. Six months had passed since they had bumped into each other in front of CatCo and there was absolutely nothing platonic about Lena's feelings for the reporter or their relationship. Still, Kara insisted they were friends as if friends cuddled on the couch on game nights or thought about kissing the other person's lips on a daily basis. For a moment, Lena wondered if the attraction was one-sided, but the lingering touches and the blue eyes dipping down to her red lips seemed to indicate otherwise. So, Lena wanted Kara and as far as she could tell, Kara wanted her too, yet every time they got close, those dammed words would fly out of Kara's mouth.

Veronica Sinclair and the Band of Rooftop-partygoers showed up one weekend to celebrate Lucy Lane's (unexpectedly) successful ice cream business venture and Lena's CEO-becoming/company-moving and -renaming. Lena had invited her other friends to join the party and Sam, Kara and Alex had accepted the offer with enthusiasm. While not on a rooftop, the celebrations were entertaining in their own right.
Much to Lena's surprise, the Danvers sisters were making friends with the Metropolis gang. The conversation went from small talk to stories about Lena so smoothly, the Luthor considered making a run for it and saving face before it was too late.
Noticing her growing distress, Kara offered a reassuring smile. 'Don't worry, we won't share anything that could damage your upstanding reputation,' she promised teasingly.
'You better not. I'm not above buying Noonan's and making sure they don't sell you any potstickers,' Lena warned.
A gasp escaped Kara's lips at the threat on her beloved potstickers. 'That's just cruel,' she exclaimed.
'Yeah, well, you know, sometimes my Luthor genes just shine through,' Lena commented, earning a chuckle from the reporter.
'Good thing I also have stories where you're not acting like a genius villain or people might get a wrong idea about you,' Kara teased carefully, her eyes fixed on Lena's face to make sure her comment hadn't crossed a line.
Instead of discomfort, a wicked grin appeared on the Luthor's lips. 'That was four years ago, Kara. Who says I haven't turned into a villain since then?'
'I do,' Kara retorted certainly. 'I would've noticed if you had suddenly become a real-life Voldemort, and not just because of the bald head and noseless-ness.'
Lena raised an amused eyebrow. 'Is that so?'
'I know you, Lena,' Kara reminded. 'Yes, you can be a tease and you could probably think of a thousand ways to make my life hell if you really wanted to, but you don't. You're not evil.'
Kara Danvers, always seeing the good in people, in Lena, no matter what. A memory flashed through Lena's mind of her standing in her office in Metropolis as the newly appointed CEO of LuthorCorp, yet dreaming of a life in National City, and she wondered if on some level, Kara suspected that her name had been on the incognito version of her list of reasons to move to National City.
Lena currently found herself in a stare-off with the reporter - curious green boring into pensive blue - while layers and layers of unsaid things floated between them. Lena usually enjoyed a good challenge, but this push-and-pull with Kara was driving her crazy. The tension was rising - an accumulation of the previous six months, and if she was being honest, the previous years - and she wasn't sure if she wanted to kiss the blonde, laugh or cry.
