Once upon a time

in a bottle, far away,

a piece of paper rested,

cradling words it had to say

Carried by the tides,

buffeted by the sea,

the ocean currents set a course

to where someone would see

Bobbing uncontrollably

in the froth of every wave,

it rolled onto a pebbled beach,

escaping a watery grave

Sun glinted on the foggy glass

and I followed where it led

then spied it in the driftwood,

seaweed as its bed

I picked it up and saw that

it contained a note inside,

and quickly unscrewed away the top

with impatience, I could not hide

Fingers scrabbled to unroll the note,

and my curiosity did surrender

to learn the message it contained

It read . . . please, return to sender
