Ash wasn't a normal kid, he knew that. everyone knew that. he's seen more in the past 3 months than most people see in their lives.
So he wasn't surprised when he shot awake dripping in a cold sweat after a nightmare.
He groaned before coming himself down. Pikachu was asleep so it can't comfort him like usual.
He quietly climbed down the ladder from his loft and snuck out the door without making a sound, walking to the beach.
He sat down on the sand and enjoyed the warm night breeze and the smell of the salty ocean water, before being accompanied by a sleepy Pikachu beside him.
"Hey, buddy. Did I wake you up?" he asked, in the soft, quiet toned voice he uses with his pokémon. Pikachu makes some noises, which roughly translate to "of course not!"
They sat there peacefully for a while. Ash had lost count of the minutes, hours maybe, that they were out there, just enjoying each others company.
Soon enough, they quietly went back inside and cuddled together until they fell asleep again, as per usual after a nightmare.

When Ash wasn't awake when Kukui was almost leaving, he was worried. As he's not Ash's legal guardian, more of a roommate, he just let Ash wake up in his own time, but making sure he was awake for school.
"Ash, kiddo, you awake?" he calls up, to no answer.
He decides to climb up the ladder to see if he was ok, and to his surprise, sees all of Ash's pokémon cuddled with him, fast asleep.
"A few more minutes won't hurt"

Soon enough, a very tired Ash climbs down the ladder, lazily dressed in his normal get-up.
"Mornin', Professor!" He says, stifling a yawn.
"Morning, keiki " Kukui replies, noticing the obvious exhaustion on the boy.
"Say, Ash, how about we go out for some Malasadas?" He asks.
"But won't we be late for school, Professor?" The young boy questions.
"Don't worry about it." Kukui replies, softness in his voice.
