In the words of a Dragon Ball GT trailer, if you liked Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, then step up to the next level. This was supposed to be the greatest anime of all time. In theory, DBGT was a combination of Dragon Ball's eye for adventure and DBZ's penchant for intense fights. Fans expected greatness form GT but what they received was anything but. The premise for this show is a simple one: Goku, the famous protagonist of the DBZ franchise, is accidently turned into a child via the ancient Black Star Dragon Balls and his mission is to find all seven before Earth explodes. Knowing the Dragon Ball Z franchise, of course the Earth would explode.

In his journey, Goku explores a ridiculous amount of planets with the aid of his 12-year old granddaughter Pan and his friend Trunks, another well-known DBZ character. The only positive aspect that separates DBGT form the two previous shows in the franchise is its animation, surprisingly sharp and high-quality. What's wrong with Dragon Ball GT, you might ask? This anime has even less character development than DBZ, choosing to focus only on Goku, Pan, and Trunks for the first saga (and, after that, it becomes The Goku Show, as usual). It's the little things that irritated me most about Dragon Ball GT: Baby Vegeta (DBGT's most infamous villain) and his painfully screechy voice, Trunks playing dress-up to distract a villain, the exceptionally predictable plot line (Goku gets beat up and then saves the day!), the "original" idea of bringing back deceased DBZ villains (the Janemba movie, anyone?), the unbelievably uncomfortable scene with Doll Tolki (a minor villain) molesting Pan, and so much more. If you liked Dragon Ball and DBZ, then you'll love this.

There are a few, very few, special things about GT, like the episode dedicated to honoring the deceased Piccolo (my favorite character ever), but the series is nothing but a disappointment covered in endless fights and detailed animation. You know what's not a disappointment? It's the Dragon Ball GT opening, the one called "Step into the Grand Tour." I'm a love of main themes and the GT opening is my all-time favorite. You might like it and you might not but, as far as I'm concerned, if you haven't seen the Dragon Ball GT opening, you haven't lived.
