I hear a clatter of pots from the kitchen. What is Alex doing?

I went to check on him. He's standing in the kitchen with sauce splattered across the stovetop and his clothes.

"What are you doing?" I ask.

"Oh hey," He looks up from a piece of paper, "I'm trying to make lasagna for Rachel."

"Oh," I nod, walking over to sit on a stool at the counter, hoping to not be in the splash zone.

Rachel is Alex's new girlfriend. They've been dating for a couple weeks now. I haven't met her yet, but I've heard all about their dates.

"Is she coming over?" I ask.

"Yeah, is that okay?" He asks as if it never even crossed his mind.

"Of course. Just don't burn the house down." I get off the stool and walk back to my room.

"Actually, y/n?" he asks, "can you help me?"

I turn around. My first instinct is no. I don't want to help him make food for his girlfriend,  but he's my best friend. "What do you need me to do?"

We spend the next hour and a half making the lasagna. We laugh as we splatter sauce all over the counters and make a mess grating cheese in our tiny kitchen.

When we're almost done, I decided to sprinkle cheese on the food as a finishing touch, and Alex is trying to clean up a little better. He puts one hand on my waist and presses into my back as he reaches over me to grab an empty sauce jar.

I immediately stop moving at the touch.

"Sorry," he pulls away instantly, "I didn't mean to do that."

"It's fine." I move away from the counter. "Rachel is going to be here soon. How about you clean yourself up a bit, and I can finish up here?"

"Are you sure?" he asks.

"Yeah, yeah go ahead."

I put the lasagna in the oven, and begin to clean up all the countertops. Alex comes out of his room as I'm putting the dishes in the dishwasher.

"Well don't you look spiffy." I said.

"Thanks." He gives me a tight smile. I can tell he's nervous.

"The lasagna will be done in like fifteen minutes, and I think you can do that on your own so Imma make myself sparse."

"Okay, thanks for all your help, by the way."

"Of course! Make sure you take all the credit. She'll think that you're extra amazing."

"Whatever."

"Whatever." I mock him. "Hey can I borrow your old mic? Mine broke and I need one until my new one comes in."

"Yeah. It's in my closet. In that old box of electronics."

"Great. Thanks." I went to his room.

The box is exactly where I remember it, although it's a complete mess. It takes ten minutes for me to find the box. I should've just waited till tomorrow.

I stand up and close his closet door. In the kitchen I can hear a feminine laugh. She's here.

I was supposed to lock myself in my room for the whole night. Not have to gallivant out of his room.

I take a deep breath. I walk out of Alex's room, hoping to go unnoticed.

"Oh, Rachel, this is my roommate, y/n!" He motioned towards me.

Great.

"Oh, hi, nice to meet you." She waves from the stool she's sitting on.

"Hey," I say casually, "I was just about to leave, but I needed to borrow something real fast."

"Where are you going?" Alex asks, probably wondering why I didn't tell him.

"Just to the store for a little bit."

I put the mic in my room and grab my keys.

I actually had nowhere to go. I get into my car and sit there for a few minutes. I decided to join a vc with the Dream Team from my phone.

"Y/N" George yells when I join.

"HI" I say back.

"I'm streaming btw." Dream says.

"Oh okay! What are you guy's talking about?" I ask.

"Nothing important." Sapnap shakes it off.

"Why is your mic literally dogwater?" George asks.

"Oh I have airpod quality right now. I was kicked out of my apartment for a couple hours." I answer.

"Why were you kicked out?" Dream chuckles.

"My roommate had a guest over. I was being nice."

"Ohh," everyone in the call sings in unison.

"Where are you now, then?" Sapnap asks.

"My car."

They laugh at me. "You're just sitting in your car?" George asks.

"George is upset because he can't drive."

"No I'm not!"

I talked on the call for a couple of hours. I drive around a little bit, but ultimately end up back in my parking space.

I walked back into the apartment later when I was sure that she wouldn't still be there.

Instead, I find them cuddled up on the couch asleep with a movie playing on the TV.

I sneak past them and go into my room, praying they'll be gone in the morning.
