**Author's Note: Set in the world of Alpha Lost.**

Prompt: Everyone thought being a beta was easy. They were wrong.

Everyone thought being a beta was easy. Every omega that I know, thinks that I have it easy because I'm a beta. Really? Maybe that's true for betas who live and work surrounded by other betas, but if they only knew what life is like for a beta surrounded by alphas and omegas.

I work for the Omega Security Force. I'm neither alpha nor omega, but I am a badass hacker. I'm the odd woman out at OSF since they usually only hire alpha/omega pairs, but when I was young and stupid, well - stupider than I am now at least, I thought no one could touch me when I sat behind a computer. I was almost right.

My brothers challenged me to hack into our high school's database. The two alpha idiots had been busy chasing omega pussy, and they had completely blown off their bio class. Our father was going to kill them as the one thing he always said was "School comes first!"

Hacking the system was easy. I had the grades changed in less time than it took my brothers to unknot from some hussy. (It's a weird thing to know about your brothers, but they often forgot I was around when they started comparing notes. I knew more about alpha sex than I EVER wanted to know.)

So I got the grades changed without a problem, but if I have one sin, other than being extremely humble, it's that I am a gossip. Well, really I'm more of a collector. I don't share whatever I find, I just like to hoard all the little pieces and snippets of information that come my way.

That morning, one of my friends that we thought was going to be a beta, presented as an omega right in the middle of class. It was unreal. Alphas pouring out all over, and her alpha wanna-be-boyfriend-but-I-can't-because-you're-a-beta almost kicked Damon's ass. There'd been all kinds of flashing lights, and it had been the talk for the rest of the day. I just wanted to find out what had really happened to my friend, Selah, and if she'd be alright.

Normally, bureaucracy moves at the speed of peanut butter. Today though, they'd been on the ball. Selah's record had already been tagged by the OSF which I totally didn't think to check so when I hacked her file, it sent up red flags to the OSF admin. I'd had no idea I'd been caught until about 15 minutes later when my mom called me to come downstairs. I went down to find my living room filled with huge alphas in black combat gear. My mom was giving me the What the fuck? look. I gave her the shrug and big eyes that replied I'm perfectly innocent in every way.

Yeah...she didn't believe me either.

"Hi, fellas." I tried to keep the nervousness out of my voice, but my weapons were a keyboard and mouse. These guys were packing some serious firepower of the bullet variety.

"Miss Emily Canda?" one of the alphas asked, stepping closer to me.

"That depends."

Silence.

"It depends? On what?" he shifted his weight and put his hands on his hips.

"On whether or not you have a search warrant. I know my rights. We're in government class this year." I refused to back down although my inner hacker was screaming at me to get the fuck out of Dodge.

Reaching into his vest pocket, he pulled out a folded up piece of paper. "I"m Commander Alpha Arlon. Do you want to read it?"

Damn it.

"No. I'm Emily."

"You'll need to come with us, Mss Canda," he stated as if I was just going to go merrily off with all the great big alphas in combat gear. Okay...I might do stupid things, but I am actually NOT that much of an idiot.

"Oh, I don't think so. I watch TV. I know what happens when the men in black come for you."

This time the silence was filled with the stunned expression on the alpha's face.

"Emily!" my mother interjected, "I'm so sorry. She's got such an overactive imagination," That last bit had been directed at me through gritted teeth.

"Quite all right," he said and with a sigh continued, "I've met her type before. We've got a special place just for her."

Type? Type! I have a type? Special place? "Oh, hell no!" is what I said aloud.

"Emily Patrice Canda!"

Did I mention that I am the ONLY beta in my family? My father and brothers are all alphas and my mother's an omega. I don't understand her and she surely doesn't understand me.

Despite my protests, I was hurriedly taken outside and stuffed into one of their big black transport vehicles. Surrounded by alphas who were all over 6.5" feet tall made me feel really claustrophobic so that when we reached our destination, I was more than happy to escape from its confines.

They walked me into a building on what I recognized to be the OSF headquarters. The Commander from my living room had a hold on my arm so I couldn't take off, which was the first thing I planned to do as soon as the chance arose, and he hustled me down the hallway.

Our entourage came to stop in front of a large set of double doors. Alpha Arlon tapped a code into a keypad by the door, and a surprisingly nasally voice sounded from the speaker, "The pizza guy is early! Grab the money!"

I was watching Arlon so I caught him rolling his eyes and letting out a sigh of resignation. Reaching for the keypad again, he entered in some more numbers and doors opened with a swoosh.

"Hey, we're getting - Oh! Hi, Arlon!" the male whose voice had come through the speaker literally bounded up to the big alpha.

"Steve. This is Emily. A new friend for your little crew of malcontents." Arlon said but I could hear the dry tone of his voice.

"Hi, Emily! Welcome aboard, matey!"

Arlon gave me a little push in the middle of my back, and then before I could turn around, all I could see was the doors closing behind him as he made his getaway.

Unlike the alpha, Steve didn't have a quiet bone in his body.

"Okay, well, really...welcome! You're...ummm...actually, you're our first girl down here so..."

First girl? Where the fuck was I? Kansas?

I started to say something snappy in reply, but Steve had been leading me around a partition wall that blocked off the entryway from the rest of the room. We'd made our way around it, and all I could think to say was "Hell, yes! I'm in!"

The entire room was a hacker's dream come true. There were about 8 workstations that were each surrounded by anywhere from four to six computer screens each. I could tell from where I stood that they were running lines of code on them.

"Oh! Good! That's...good," Steve's voice drifted off, "Don't you want to know what we do first?"

"You're hackers for the OSF!" I answered him. There was no way this geek crew was hiding out in the OSF headquarters if they weren't doing something shady.

"Well...that pretty much sums it up. So...you're a beta?"

"Yep."

"We're all omegas. Except for Tommy over there," a big guy across the room waved his hand when Steve said his name, "He's an alpha."

Steve took me around and showed me the place. They'd already had a workstation set up with my log in info on it.

Pushy bastards.
