I gulped hardly once I saw the house from far.

I was on my way back home after a long day at work. After the early morning encounter with the nosy neighbor, I kept debating myself whether to go into the house or run away. In the end, I decided to go in. Even if I run away, I would need to pack my belongings. Hesitantly, I walked in, holding a hand to my chest as my heart was hammering crazily in there.

To my luck, there was no sign of the figure. Maybe he appears only at night. Maybe.

Cautiously, I walked around the house, getting ready for work that I missed the day before. I kept jumping and jolting whenever I hear a sound coming from outside or even if some wind brushed against my body. Somehow, I managed to get ready within minutes and rush off to work not noticing that it was still early to go. I guess I was just terrified to stay in that house.

I had to apologize to the orchestra like hundred times for missing the rehearsal and not even answering the calls and the texts that they sent when I didn't show up. They only passed the matter because of how disoriented and sick I looked –due to wandering the night cold streets in thin clothes for hours- plus having bruised knees and scratched elbows from tripping over the stairs.

I caught up quickly with what I missed that day. The rest of the rehearsal went smooth as usual. Ironically, I was playing The Phantom Of The Opera while thinking of The Phantom Of My House.

I gulped again before taking a very deep breath, tightened my grip around the violin's case, and walked up to the house. I took the few steps to the front door and pulled out the key, bringing it to the keyhole. My hand kept shaking vigorously as I tried to unlock the door so I had to support it with my other hand.

The door was unlocked and I pushed it open. I peeked through the darkness at the entrance of the house, trying to catch anything paranormal but there was only darkness and coldness.

I stepped in, turned on the lights then slammed the door behind me. I walked into the house trembling and hugging myself, expecting that the figure would appear any second or I would experience anything like that morning. I sighed when I found the shore clear. No figures, no mixers working, no TV sending strange sounds, no laptop displaying whatever, and no flickering lights. The place looked just like a normal old house.

A wave of relief passed through my body. Feeling a little secure, I kicked off my shoes and dropped my belongings before I head to my room upstairs to get changed. I was still scared of the place but I pushed the thought to the back of my skull since I was terribly tired and hungry.

I changed into my pajama and went downstairs to cook myself a proper meal since I didn't have one for days. I reached the few steps by the portraits, trying my best to ignore them since I started to feel the creepiness in them. More specifically, my great grandpa's. Something inside me made me stop there nevertheless how much my brain was cursing me for doing that.
