memorial day the day the community pools opened and an excuse for niggas to cook. it also happened to be the day before heaven's 13th birthday. bugs and aj threw the football around his backyard while heaven did dubsmash's. aj's cousins were here along with his grandparents so was bugs siblings and mom, all heaven brought was herself and deja. aj would often look back a few times making sure to check on her since she didn't really know anyone else.

"aye hev come're!" aj shouted

"alijah why are you yelling?" she said softly

"mmcht i'm not even being loud you just being quiet" he waved her off

"wassup?" she sat down at the table drinking some of his soda

"what if i backwashed?" aj mugged asking her

"you don't tho" hev sassed sticking her tongue out

"imma start doing that now since you love drinking my shit"

"now bestie" heaven stale faced him

"i'm playing but you enjoying yourself?"

"yes i'm hungry tho" heaven rubbed her stomach

"come on i think my daddy done with the burgers" aj grabbed her hand leading them to the kitchen

"dad you done wit the food we bout to die of starvation" aj sighed causing some people in the kitchen to laugh

"you see them babies ain't gon no meat on they bones, lil mama and aj damn near the same size" aj's big cousin tasha said

"hey i got a lil weight" heaven said chuckling

"oh my fault babygirl" tasha stuck her hands up

"lijah the food done y'all go wash y'all hands" alijah sr told the preteens

heaven and aj walked to the main bathroom taking turns washing their hands. bugs was already in line making his plate roasting aj's lil cousins. everyone was used to bugs antics and paid him no mind.

"boy you don had braces for two years and still got buck teeth ugly ahh"

"boy you been the same height and weight for three years non growing ahh lil boy. receding hairline ahh boy. pistol grip chin ugly ahh lil boy." bugs said laughing

"not too much tionne" alijah sr. said

"my fault unc"

aj and heaven sat down eating paying more attention to their plates than anyone else. heaven decided to not eat until the food was done so she didn't get full fast and within 6 minutes of her making her plate it was gone. one thing about alijah sr was that he could throw down in the kitchen, he had a passion for cooking and stayed in the kitchen although half of that time was spent cooking up crack.

aj and heaven sat on the couch in the den watching king kong wrapped up in blankets. since no one was in there with them aj took this as an opportunity to kiss heaven.

"heaven" he called out

"hmm?" she hummed keeping her eyes on the television

"you had your first kiss yet?" aj asked making her turn and look at him

heaven shook her head and he smirked pausing the tv.

"you want to?" aj asked

heaven stared at him for a second then scooted closer to him, nervous wasn't even the word to describe what heaven was feeling right now. alijah and heaven leaned in at the same time touching lips. they both pulled away scooting away from each other smiling. bugs came into the den with three water guns tossing two to hev and aj.

"we finna have a big ass water fight boys versus girls come on!"

"on bro the boys gon win" aj said making heaven smack her lips

"tuh! girls gon win"  hev said smiling

"yeah we gon see" bugs said
