Varian was pretty smart for his age; despite being a freshman he was placed into some senior classes. This meant he had some classes with Rapunzel, which is why he was over at her house in the first place. He and Rapunzel sit together in science and usually help each other with their work, so when Rapunzel needed help with her homework Varian offered to come over and help.

So there he was, sitting on Rapunzel's floor doing homework. He wasn't great at explaining things, and sometimes he just wanted to snatch the paper from her and do it himself, but he did have some patience and tried his best to explain. They finished their work and decided to just hang out for a little bit, Varian didn't want to walk home and didn't want to inconvenience Rapunzel's parents to bring him home so he was waiting until his father got off work to come pick him up.

"Wanna go get a snack? I haven't eaten since lunch." Rapunzel asked, packing her things back into her backpack.

"Yeah sure."

They left to the kitchen, Rapunzel looked through the pantry as Varian sat at the table, looking around. He hadn't actually been to her house before.

"Hey! Didn't know you were home. Who's this?" Someone walked into the kitchen, they looked around Varian's age. Rapunzel was about to respond when they started to speak again. "Wait, I've seen you around! You're in my literature class!"

He didn't respond for a second, just studying them. Their hair, the way it framed their face; their eyes and the way they sparked in the light from the lightbulbs above them; their smile made his stomach fill with butterflies; and their voice just sent his head into a frenzy of emotion.

"Hello?" (Y/n) asked, walking closer to him.

"Oh, uh.." he was snapped out of his trance. "You know who I am?"

"Yeah, it's pretty hard to forget someone with a blue streak in their hair." (y/n) chuckled. "Did you dye it?"

"No.." He muttered. He wasn't sure why he was so nervous, but he hated it. He wanted to talk to them but anything he thought of just didn't leave his throat.

"Right, well.. I'll see you later." (y/n) said before leaving, feeling a bit awkward.

He just waved at them, watching them walk away as if they were the only thing there.

"What was that?" Rapunzel asked, tossing him a pack of crackers. She's never seen him act like that before.

"I'm not sure. I didn't know you had a sibling."

"Yeah, well they're pretty quiet in school."

After that interaction the two just went back to Rapunzel's room to hang out until Quirin got there. But the rest of that night (y/n) didn't leave his mind. He knew he'd have to at least try to be friends, and that's exactly what he would do.
