Chapter three

Chapter 3 - the picnic

Maria and I have been here for a few days now

I woke up to knocking on my door

"Come in" I yawned

Maria comes in

"Good morning Sunshine" I groaned and threw the pillow over my face.

"Oh good morning Maria" I respond in a tired voice

"I thought maybe we could go out to a picnic today, you know in the hills" she said excited

"Oh yes that would be lovely" Maria and I love the nature

"Ok get dressed and then we leave after breakfast"

I got dressed and went downstairs, the Captain had left for Vienna earlier that morning and when I came down Friedrich was the only one at the table.

"Oh good morning" I said, he turned quickly around and nodded

"Good morning" he said, he smiled and told me to sit down next to him

"Where is everyone?" I asked, not that it was a problem they weren't here it's just that I feel like they're always on time, together.

"Oh, when father leaves it gives us an opportunity to spend a little more time on stuff like sleeping" he said with a little laugh

He turned his head towards me and I stared right into his eyes, they were gorgeous, very blue, and his blonde hair was laying perfect on his head.

We were interrupted by the rest, he just smiled and turned back around. I was about to move to my seat but Louisa told me to sit where I sat with a smirk, I was confused but went along with it.

Maria told them about our plans and they were so happy about it.

"A picnic sounds lovely" Liesl said happily

"Oh yeah we haven't been to one in ages" Brigitta said

"Why's that?" I asked, they faces turned sad, nobody responded

"Well you see-" Friedrich began "our mother is uh also dead" he continued

I felt my heart drop, I knew exactly what pain the were feeling, I tried to be as careful as possible

"Oh I'm so sorry, I totally forgot" I said in a quiet tone.

"It's ok, we just stopped after that, music, picnic, most fun was gone" Louisa said looking down

I looked over at Maria with a desperate look, I was bad with these situations, so she decided to help me out

"Well we will have to pick up some groceries first so come on eat up"

"Thank you so much for these clothes Fräulein Maria" the children said

"Oh no problem" she responded

"How come you don't have similar dress as me?" Marta asked me

Everyone went quiet

"oh that's just because I had a dress already"

"Yeah, your dress is really pretty" she said

"Thank you so much Marta" I told her, I looked up and caught Friedrich's eyes on me, but he looked away at once.

In the hills

"Fräulein Maria?" Louisa started

"Mhm"

"Can we do this everyday?"

"Don't you think you'd soon get tired of it, Louisa?" Maria replied

"I suppose so. Every other day?" She asked again

"I haven't had so much fun since the day we put glue on Fräulein Josephine's toothbrush." Kurt added

"I can't understand how children as nice as you can manage to place such awful tricks on people." Maria said

"Oh it's easy" Brigitta said

"But why do it?"

"How else can we get father's attention?" Liesl asked

"Oh I see" Maria said "well, we'll have to think about that one"

"All right everybody! over here!" Maria announced

"What are we going to do?" Marta asked

"Let's think of something to sing for the baroness when she comes" Maria replied

"Father doesn't like us to sing"

"Well perhaps we can change his mind" I said

"Ophelia would you like to take this one?" Maria said handing me the guitar, she taught me how to play when I was younger, but I had never played in front of anybody before

"Why me Maria? I've never played in front of anybody before"

"Well, there's always a first time for everything right?" she said with a smile

"Hmm I don't know" I said while I hesitated to take the guitar.

"Oh please play for us Lia" Brigitta said, that was the first time one of them used my nickname, I felt a hint of joy inside.

"Yes please play for us" Friedrich repeated

I felt my face heat up and turn red

"Yes please Ophelia, please" now they were all asking

"Fine, fine, fine, I will"

They all cheered

'What a nice group of kids'

"Ok what songs do you know?" I asked

"We don't know any songs" Friedrich said

"Not any?" I asked confused

"We don't even know how to sing" Louisa told me

"Well let's not lose any time. You must learn" said Maria and motioned me to sit down.

"But how?" Gretl asked

I started singing the do-re-mi song Maria sang for me when I was younger.

I must admit I was a little nervous, all eyes on me, and especially Friedrich, I don't know why, but he makes me extra nervous, it's probably nothing just something I've noticed

Time skips and everyone is done singing

We were heading back to the house, I was just singing for myself not thinking anyone heard me, we saw Captain and a lovely woman next to him, everyone started waving like crazy and then the boat tipped over, I felt 2 arms wrap around my waist I looked up in shock, it was Friedrich.

"I got you" he said

I'm pretty sure I was red as a tomato, gosh this is so embarrassing.

He then picked me up in bridal style and carried me up to land. And he looked me straight in the eye while he did.

"Ok, ok, put me down geez" I said rolling my eyes playfully

"As you wish" he put me down gently, we then heard a whistle and suddenly all the children were in a line, Captain then told them to go get cleaned up, including me, we ran into the house and looked for towels.

I was drying myself when I felt someone tap me on the shoulder.

It was Liesl

"Hey, what can do for you?" I asked

"I saw you and Friedrich outside, you look very cute together"
