A year following Y/N's enlistment into the Scout Regiment, a new training corps had opened up, the 104th Training Corps. Y/N had the urge to drop in and out of the new training corps' training every so often. That was when Y/N decided to sneak out to have fun at the cadet corps. Because that day was the opening ceremony, the latter instantly left HQ without a word and silently left without getting caught by anyone. Y/N was now by the horse barracks with her Scout cloak on, concealing her head, and grabbed one of the horses to head into the training grounds.
When Y/N arrived at the training grounds, hundreds of trainees gathered at the opening ceremony. She was surprised to see many people willing to join the military, especially considering that this was only one division she was looking at: the southern division of the 104th corps. As she dropped her horse to the side, she noticed a tall man in a uniform who she assumed was the commandant of that division. The moment Y/N went around to a nearby building porch, which happened to be the dining hall's porch. She squinted her eyes closer to realize that the man who acted as the current commandant was none other than the former Scout Regiment Commander, Keith Shadis.
'I see this is where Commander Shadis had ended working after leaving the Scout Regiment...'
While Keith was yelling at the trainees, some people stood out to Y/N. Those who stood out were among the following, the boy with brown hair and teal-green eyes, the girl with black hair and eyes, the tall blond male with gold eyes and the blonde girl with blue eyes.
"What's your name, maggot?!" Keith shouted at a short blond male. The boy had a bowl cut and didn't seem quite capable of physical combat to Y/N.
"Armin Arlert from Shinganshina District, sir!" The boy, Armin Arlert, responded while saluting at him.
'Shinganshina district...? That boy must've seen some shit that day...'
Keith moved on from Armin and skipped through some trainees. Y/N had assumed that he'd ignored them because they seemed very different from the rest of the trainees. Keith soon stops at a taller boy with an undercut and begins yelling at him. The boy had a clear goal: to live in the interior and have an easy life working as an officer in the military police. If only he knew. Y/N knew that the royal government was corrupt, especially the military police, as she was a member of the Scout Regiment, and both regiments were often at odds. Suddenly, Keith knocked the boy down with his head and yelled at him once more for crouching down after getting his head slammed. Y/N covered her mouth, trying not to laugh at the scene.
Keith moved on to the next trainee. This time, it was a trainee with a buzz cut. With the usual yelling, the boy introduces himself as Connie Springer, but he gives the wrong salute by reversing it. Then Keith grabs Connie by the head and lifts him off the ground.
"You've got it backwards...Connie Springer. I know they taught you at the start...The salute indicates your dedication to serving the common good, heart and soul. Is your heart on your right side, Springer?!"
Y/N wanted to laugh so bad at this point after the headbutt. The head grab was getting to her, and she was about to burst out loud laughter. Suddenly, there was a loud crunch. The loud crunching sounds continued as the entire area became dead silent, leaving that crunching noise to fill the silence. Everyone's head turned toward the sound, and all eyes lay on a girl with auburn hair munching on a potato. Everyone was speechless; some were nervous, seeing the girl eating in the middle of orientation. Keith dropped Connie to the ground in response to catching her eating the potato.
"Hey...What the hell are you doing?!" Keith says, directing the question at the girl in a low tone. The girl darted her gaze at Keith and glanced back away, pretending she didn't hear him or acted like he wasn't talking to her. Then, he approached her. "You, scum! I'm talking to you! What the hell's your name?!" He shouted.
