Gwen's soul pumped to life as she flicked open a silk fan.
She twirled the fan over her wrist. She waited for the beat, then flung it into the air. As the music crescendoed, she caught the fan behind her and tore up the stage.
The routine was an instant crowd favorite. Gwen's dancing was mind-blowingly athletic. She manipulated first one, then two, then three fans fluidly as water.
It was so much fun. For a moment Gwen wasn't a pointy eared - workaholic- super-skinny perfectionist. She was a pop star! She was TikTok gone viral! She was the most glamorous girl at prom!
And -most of all - she was allowed to smile.
Jim got it all on video.
"God this is so great!" Phone still on Gwen, he waved down Ariel. "Are you seeing this slight of hand?! That's all Peter right there! Those might as well be daggers!"
"Born entertainer!" Ariel proclaimed, crossing the table to Melody. "Guppy! That's your cousin! That's Gwendolyn!"
Melody lit like a firefly. The moment Gwen had started dancing, Melody folded a menu into a fan and began replicating Gwen's moves. But once she discovered Gwen was her cousin, she squealed and bounded for the stage.
"Rugrat on on the loose!" Jim lowered his phone. "Melody!"
"Relax saaailor!" Ariel bounced to the music. "Let her explore! I'm sure she's just going to say hi!"
"Yeah or she's going to jump on stage!"
"Ohhhhh I hope she does! A cousin-cousin dance would be SO cute!"
Jim decided it SO wouldn't.
Half rising, he started to exit the booth. "Ariel we've got to rein her in somewhe – "
Abruptly his phone buzzed. It was from Wendy.
