25. Don't Give Up

Birla Hospital had never seen so many colors and lights ever in its history as it did on that day, not only was the children's ward decorated with the best decoration, it was surrounded with happiness, laughter and most importantly, love. The entire floor was so well done, a newly wedded bride would also fade in comparison. Every single kid admitted in the ward were marveled when they woke up from their nap, it was like they entered into a different world, a world which they often heard in fairy tales and story books. The warden, the doctors and the nurses and staff were equally ecstatic as the kids were, but of course they knew what was happening and they all helped in every single way.

Each room was decorated as per different themes and festivals, some had decors for Diwali and Christmas, some had Dinos and Power Rangers and some had themes like sports and theatre, there was also a musical themed room, a paintball arcade and laser lights. Moreover there were loads to eat and drink, vending machines, and snacks were all freely available and there was not a single room which was left out. Temporary tattoo artists, funny mascots, happy clowns and other such artists were called to entertain and they all did their job flawlessly. And a massive harmless sword was readied to be given to the most brave soldier at war.

Kaustub deserved the best farewell and Akshara poured her heart out in making this day the best day the kid could ever witness.

When Abhi called Akshara to meet Kaustub, she rushed to see him and her heart broke on seeing her favourite person be so miserable and sad, he was weak and fragile and couldn't even stand on his own for a long time. Not only did he need constant care, he also carried an oxygen cylinder with him to help him breathe and Akshara decided that if The Almighty was gonna be adamant to take Kaustub away from them, she might as well throw a fight.

And she did.

The entire day, Akshara with the help of Neil and Abhi, Arohi and Kairav along with Abhi's cousin contacted all party planners and carnival artists, they gathered as many people as possible to make the one day as special as it could be and since The Birla's had good contacts, Akshara's work was easily intiated. She spend her entire day brain stormig, negotiating, and planning and without wasting a single second, she executed it perfectly for the next day. Of course, she owed a lot to all the people who personally helped her, especially Abhi's siblings, but she did it, she finally put a fight, she put the best day any kid could ever dream of having.

Kaustub forgot for the entire day that he was going to die soon or that he was fighting a losing battle, or that he was going away. He did everything, visited all the rooms, tried everything, almost tasted all his favourite items, clicked thousands of pictures and danced around with his parents on his favourite songs. The impact that one day had on that kid was insane, he was laughing, yelling, screaming and enjoying every single bit of the efforts Akshara put in making his day to be the best. He celebrated Diwali, Holi and Christmas, cut his cake for all birthdays to come and recorded a video for his parents that they would see on each of his birthday as a thank you for them.

Everything was perfect, the kid had fun, the other sick kids treated Kaustub with admiration for the special treatment he got and all his friends praised him and his family saw him happy like never before, but what actually felt off was Akshara's behaviour towards Abhi.

She was very different with him, very formal, very particular in the words she spoke and did not let him enter her personal space. Abhi at first gave her the benefit of the doubt since she was overloaded with the surprise and the thousands of things she had to arrange, but when at lunch he almost got some time to talk to her, she was acting very distant and hardly meeting his eyes. He even asked her if something was the matter but she curtly uttered a no and left abruptly.
