"Hi Ella" Maya said walking towards the girl. The four-year-old hadn't spoken much since she arrived to the hospital. She just told the nice lady her name and age and she would ask for her parents every few minutes. Ella was starting to get really frustrated, she wanted her parents and no one was telling her where they were "How are you?"

"Hi" the four-year-old whispered, looking up for a few seconds recognizing the woman instantly "Good" she simply answered shrugging

"Well it's good to hear that" the blonde said sitting next to her. Carina smiled looking at the interaction of her wife and the girl staying a few steps away from them not wanting to interrupt but her wife, with different plans, motioned for her to come closer "this is Carina, she will take good care of you while you are here" Maya knew that the girl was still in shock due to the previous events and also knew that she was going to need someone to generate some kind of trust with. There was no one better for that than the Italian

"Hello bella" the brunette said smiling at the child. She understood Maya and she could stay for a while, while they waited for social services. Ella looked at her for a few seconds and nodded, she seem nice and she was a doctor. Doctors take care of people, she had to be nice right?

"Hello?" a voice said making the two women flinch a little by the sudden appearence "Sorry to interrupt" a tall brunete said from the door "I'm Leah Nelson, social worker from child services" she introduced herself "Can I speak to you outside?" she asked and Maya instantly stood up letting Carina alone with the girl

"Maya Bishop, Captain of Station 19, fire department" she said shaking the woman's hand

"Nice to meet you Captain" the woman said nicely "Well as I'm sure you are aware we haven't been able to contact to any other family members" she started explaining "We are making some other calls but if that doesn't changes we'll have to put her on the system" Maya nodded knowing how this worked "I would like her to stay here for a little while, but everything indicates us she will end up in a group home"

As they finished their talk Maya felt a lump form in her throat. The girl was very little, she was four for fuck's sake. Losing her parents was bad enough to have to add more things and she knew the worst part hadn't happened yet. Someone would have to tell a four-year-old her parents weren't coming back, that they were gone.

"What type of doctor are you?" the blonde heard Ella ask as she made her way towards her

"It's called OB, I help mommies have their babies" Carina explained smiling while she run her fingers through the girl's hair and let out a chuckle when she saw the girl's shocked expression. Ella liked Carina, she wasn't scary like everyone else, she was nice like Maya "Look who's back" the Italian said making the girl open her eyes to look at the blonde woman that walked towards her

"What are you two doing?" Maya asked seeing the scene. The brunette was now sitting next to the girl with an arm around her caressing the girl's hair, while the four-year-old leaned against her with her eyes closed

"We are just having a little chat right?" Carina said and the little blonde giggled nodding making Maya smile. It was nice seeing the little girl talking and smiling

"When are my mommy and daddy picking me up?" the little girl suddenly asked and the firefighter's smile disappeared. She liked Carina and Maya but she missed her parents and she wanted to go home. Maya looked at her wife trying to think of the best way to continue this conversation

"Do you remember how you get that cut on your head?" Carina asked softly still with her fingers on the girl's hair. There was no easy way of saying this, let alone to a child

"Car accident" the toddler answered not really understanding why would the woman ask that. What did the car crash had to do with her parents?

"Yes, the car accident" she continued "Your mommy and daddy got really hurt..." she said slowly choosing her words. She knew she had to be really clear on how she said this, kids don't understand abstract concepts or expressions so if she didn't say it right the girl would end up confused "they got hurt and they died" she said, as unkind as that word sounded she knew she had to say it to make sure the kid understood what happened.

"What is that?" the girl asked. She didn't understood what died mean. Maya looked at her wife seeing some tears start to well up in her eyes

"When somebody dies their body stops working. A dead body does not breathe because their lungs are no longer working and the heart has stopped. It cannot move, it will be very quiet and still. It also cannot feel anything so there's no pain" the doctor tried to explain as best as she could for the little girl to understand

"They not coming back? but... they always come back" the girl said starting to undestand what being dead meant and not liking it. Maya was waiting for some sort of reaction but the girl looked blank

"They are not bella, I'm sorry"
