Finally, the side story some of you wanted to read. Arankita's story and everything leading up to Waimi's birth. This will be a 2 part chapter because I wanted to post something sooner rather than later but I'm not done with their story yet. Enjoy!
9+ years ago (March)
Kita plucked at a crispy piece of grass beside him, twirling it between his fingers before dropping it. He glanced up at the graves in front of him, reading his parents' names over and over again. Gray lettering on a gray stone, blending in with the gray sky all because Kita's life lacked color. He no longer enjoys the lively life he used to have, every aspect of himself residing in a grayscale after his parents' deaths.
Before things turned gray, no matter how blunt and uptight people claimed he was, he never felt that way. His life used to be so full of fun and activity. He enjoyed playing volleyball where the gym was alive with his teammates and the game. Studying sounded boring for others, but for him his mind felt amused and sharp. Talking with friends and family always made him happy, hearing his siblings' shenanigans or how much his boyfriend loves him.
Now volleyball is a nuisance, studying is boring, and he doesn't have the energy for conversations of any context anymore.
It's been a month since his parents have been gone. Every day so far has felt like the first morning he woke up after finding out, stuck in an endlessly wandering state. Unable to tell if he's dreaming and waiting for that moment he wakes up from the nightmare.
Every moment of the day it happened stuck in his memory, probably forever. He was at school, going about his normal routine. Morning volleyball practice, talking with his boyfriend and the twins. The team joked around about Kita being their new captain for the upcoming school year, having the title given to him by their current third years. Aran was so proud of him and very expressive about it, letting everyone know how cool his boyfriend is.
Class went on as usual, Kita diligently taking notes and working on assignments. Lunch that day was probably the most exciting and fun one he and his friends ever had. In retrospect, Kita should have known something was off that day because he was in such high spirits. He remembers lunch was the last time he smiled and even laughed genuinely.
After lunch, they returned to classes and Kita continued working on assignments. Then the principal interrupted the teacher and called her into the hall, leaving the students to whisper about what was going on. When the teacher returned to the room, she looked right at Kita like she'd seen a ghost. She forced a smile onto her face and calmly asked him to follow her. Alarms blared in Kita's head in that moment and he remembers the ringing, almost passing out from forgetting to breathe.
The teacher and principal escorted him outside where the police waited. No one said a word to him and Kita was terrified to ask, but he knew someone was dead. Someone he cared about, loved, and relied on was dead. The way the adults looked at him, hushed their voices to keep him from hearing, told him what he dreaded to know.
The police were there to escort him to the hospital, where the rest of his family waited. He finally caved and asked them what happened, but they couldn't out right tell him the news. Since he's an omega, these situation are supposed to be handled cautiously in case of a drop. Kita didn't find out what happened until they got to the hospital and he saw his sister and Granny crying together. He wondered if something happened to his brother and where their parents were. Then the cops said they were picking up his little brother from school and Kita internally sighed in relief, but only until he remembered who was missing.
Granny delivered the news. Kita didn't drop, but he fell into a state of shock that should have been deemed the same thing. A while later when his little brother showed up, things didn't go so well. His brother dropped, luckily not for long, but it was agonizing to panic about him, too.
