Chapter 17

Entering the house, hand in hand with me holding on tightly to Dominic's hand, I see an old lady walking up to us with a huge smile on her face.

"Oh my god, Dominic. You've grown so much" she says, her thick Spanish accent clear in her tone.

"Tiá!(Aunty) Wow you're gone shorter" Dominic says and returns her embrace.

They pull away from the hug and Dominic gets hold of my hand again "Tià, I want you to meet my girlfriend" she looks at me and her wrinkled lips curl up as if she is looking at something gross.

Then she gives me a small smile. I love Dominic's family. They're all so sweet and kind, and they're all huggers, but I kinda think the old lady doesn't like me very much.

On the plane I thought that none of them would like me but I'm glad to know I was wrong, I think.

"She is Sofia, Alejandro and Isabella's mother" Dom says.

"It's nice to meet you" I say to her with a smile.

She looks at Dominic then to me "What's your name girl?" She scans my clothing.

"It's Evelyn" I say with a smile on my face, my hands shaking nervous.

She walks away and Dominic notices her behaviour so hold my hand and gives it a reassuring squeeze.

Dominic's aunty calls us all for dinner. Besides the looks and comments she has been sending me, I think everyone else likes me.

I'm still wondering what I've done to her to recieve her dirty looks. Dominic holds onto my left hand from under the dining table and I'm brought out of my thoughts.

I try to pull my hand away but his grip is too tight, not enough to hurt me though. He continues to fill two plates of food and then places one in front of me.

I eat my food slowly and try to ignore the looks I'm getting from Sofia.

I think Isabella noticed the awkwardness so she decides to speak up "So how long are you two planning to stay?" she asks, directing her question to Dominic.

she looks at me and nods, I nod back, silently thanking her. "For about a week, if everything goes well" he says and shoves a bite of rice in his mouth.

I hear Javier mumble something from the other side of the table but I don't make out what he said.

After dinner, Dominic takes me to a guest room. He told his Sofia that I'll be sleeping with him. She was against it at first but then reluctantly agreed.

I come out of the shower and look into my bag of clothes and pick out a pajama shorts and top. After dressing up I hear a knock on the door.

Dominic is in the shower so I am forced to open the door. Her short, and thin grey hair is resting on her shoulders and her narrowed eyes are staring at me.

She pushes her way into the room and I am left standing by the door "I want to know what exactly you want from my nephew" she says to me accusingly.

I am stunned. Sofia thinks I want something from Dominic. Do I pose as that type of person, who stays with someone for my own motive.

"I don't understand...." she cuts me off by saying "Why else would a teenage girl be after a man?" she walks towards me "A doctor too"

she thinks I want Dominic for money. When she said that, I felt really hurt and degraded. I'm sure Dominic knows that I'm not that kind of person.

"Listen to me girl, I don't want you near my nephew" she says "You are going to stop this....relationship"

she really thinks I'm going to leave Dom. We've only been officially dating for one day and I'm not ready to be away from him.

"I'm not leaving him" I say to her. "You will leave him or I will make him leave you, you bitc..." I stop her before she completed her sentence.

"You wouldn't want to finish that" I say, walking towards her "I don't think you know what you're saying. I don't disrespect elders but I think you've said more than enough"

She takes a step back and inhales sharply. I am done taking got from everyone, especially people who are nothing to me. And I'm so done being told that I'm too young.

"Goodnight tiá" I say sweetly, waving to her with my fingers and she looks furious. She then glances to the bathroom door, she sighs and leaves the room.

Really. What does she think of herself. I'm not going to do anything I don't want l do from now on and I don't give a shit what people think.

I hear shuffling behind me so I turn and notice Dominic has come out of the bathroom.

"You handled that well" he says as he puts on a sweatpants. My mouth goes dry.

"I uh, she was being rude"

"I saw the whole thing Evelyn" he walks to the bed "You did the right thing" he says.

I did? I actually thought he'd be mad since I didn't quite respect his aunty
"I did?"

"Yes, Evelyn. Everybody in this house is afraid of her, always listening to her and she had no right to interfere in our lives" he says.

He takes my silence as a hint to continue "She's actually very nice when you get to know her so I don't know why she acted like that" he says.

"She told me to leave you. She thinks I'm with you for your money" I say.

"We'll figure this out in the morning, kay?" he says and gets under the covers on the bed "I want to hold you" I smile and get into bed.
